OBJECTIVES Definition of research utilization Outline barriers to nursing research utilization. Know ways on how to improve nursing research utilization List factors influencing research utilization
RESEARCH UTILIZATION
This is a systematic method of implementing, applying and evaluating research-
based intervention in practice. (Ashley, 2005) It uses research to guide clinical practice and focuses particularly on using scientific study in clinical practice. (Estabooks, Winther & Dersen, 2004) Research utilization is a process in which relevant research is critically examined and applied to patient care Research utilization is the process of systematically integrating findings of completed nursing research studies into clinical nursing practice The importance aspect is using already existing research data and findings to modify nursing practice
BARRIERS TO NURSING RESEARCH UTILIZATION
Nurses lack of knowledge.
Nurses negative attitude towards nursing research. Inadequate means of disseminating nursing research. Inadequate means of disseminating nursing research findings. Lack of institutional support. Study findings that are not ready for use in nursing practice. HOW TO IMPROVE NURSING RESEARCH UTILIZATION
The following steps should be followed;
1. Identify clinical nursing practice problems 2. Assess the existing knowledge base on the issue 3. Design a nursing practice innovation based on a scientific research base 4. Implement clinical trials and evaluation of the innovation 5. Decide to adopt, revise or reject the innovation 6. Develop strategies to extend tie innovation of other settings 7. Determine means of continuing the innovation over time
FACTORS INFLUENCING RESEARCH UTILIZATION
1. Nurses perception 2. Work environment 3. Institution i.e philosophy and organization of institution
Nurses perception- while many appreciate the importance of research in
improving patient outcomes, some fail to appreciate that research related activities are a legitimate aspect of a nurse role rather than feeling ownership as research utilization project, some nurses perceive project-related activities are of low priority partly accounts for nurses neglecting research utilization fasts such as literature searching. The work environment- events affecting work environment are not always conducive to success as project e.g during night shift nurses are reduced The institution- nurses opinion about what nursing tasks should be given priority are influenced by institutional policy. Activities not included in the scheme are perceived as less important and participation in research related activities is not included. REFERENCES
