Pre Lab 11

Acids, Bases, and Buffers

Stephen Kinney

Professor Cooper

Course: Chem. B1B

Date: 13 March 2012

Kinney 2

Objective: In this lab, we will be studying acids, bases, and buffers by performing multiple

titrations. Once we have completed all the titrations, we will use our collected data to make a

titration graph or a titration curve. From this titration curve we should be able to tell when the

reaction is at equilibrium and how much base it will take to neutralize the acid in the experiment.

After this experiment is over we will have a pretty good idea of the role the equilibrium constant

plays in acid base neutralization reactions.

Background Information: All the materials we will be using will be provided along with all the

lab equipment available to us in the laboratory. We will also be allowed to use Professor

Cooper’s syllabus as a guide to help us write up our lab reports.

Procedure: The procedure we will be following is listed on the handout out Professor Cooper

handed out during class (pp. 1-15).

Important Equations and useful relationship:

Data/Calculations: When the procedure is completed, use gravimetric analysis and

stoichiometry to determine the molarity of the cupric salt solution.

Error Analysis: After all the calculations have been completed, assess the experiment and

consider what could have gone wrong.

Conclusion: After the entire experiment is complete, relate the data compiled during the

experiment to the procedure, then discuss how to improve the experiment.
