When the cloud is formed

(cumulonimbus), it gets ionized, and
a voltage appears between the cloud
and the earth. ARE THESE KA

Technical background: Operating principle
A surge protective device (SPD) is an element with one or several components
inside which value of impedance relies on the voltage between its terminals.
It acts, therefore, as a voltage controlled switch:
When the supply voltage is lower than its activation voltage it behaves like
an open circuit, i.e., no current flows through it.
When the supply voltage is higher than its activation voltage its impedance is
close to zero, diverting all the discharge current to earth and preventing it
from affecting the receivers.

25
Technical background: SPD Technology

Metal Oxide Varistors  Variable resistance depending on voltage & frequency.

(MOV)  Medium discharge capacity.
 25 ns of response time.
 Low residual voltage.
 Could reach end-of-life by one high impulse or with a
few of medium impulses.

Silicon Junction Diode  Low discharge capacity.

 Response time very low: 1ns.
 Bidirectional.
 Low residual voltage.
 Low capacitance (telecom applications).

Spark Gap &  High discharge capacity.

 100 ns response time.
Gas Discharge Tube  No leakage current due to degradation.
 Once is activated, the residual voltage is very low.
 The peak needed to activate it is very high, so the
residual voltage is high.

26
Technical background: Definitions

Any cooper cable is subject to receive induced overvoltages. There are two kinds:
Between conductors (phase and neutral)
Between and conductor and ground

Due to this, there are two methods of protection:

Differential mode
Common mode

Some equipments offers both protections or just

one.

In installations that do not have earthing

connection differential mode of protection is
possible.

• Nominal current (In) CLASSIFY
• Maximum current (Imax) SPD TYPES
• Impulse current (Iimp)

32
KEY SURGE PARAMETERS

1- Robustness: Ityp Typical surge current

The Iimp/Imax and In show the robustness of the SPD, but the real surge currents are
lower.

The Typical Surge Current (Ityp) is the

value that statistically the SPD faces in
real life.
The value depends on the level of exposure:

- HIGH EXPOSED
LOCATIONS (LPZ1):

Ityp = 20kA 8/20

- LOW EXPOSED LOCATIONS OR

SWITCHING SURGES (LPZ2):

Ityp = 5kA 8/20

33
KEY SURGE PARAMETERS

1- Robustness:
Life time of the SPDs

To estimate the lifetime of the SPD is a must in order to guarantee the protection. The
SPD must be designed in order to pass the test of the standards, but furthermore to
guarantee a great performance in real life.

THE LIFETIME IS DESCRIBED WITH THE NUMBER OF HITS that the SPD is able to
withstand at Typical Surge Current (Ityp).

The minimum lifetimes values that we must ask for are:

• HIGH EXPOSED LOCATIONS: 100-200 peaks
• LOW EXPOSED LOCATIONS OR INTERNAL SURGES: 500 peaks

It is important to highlight that in an electrical storm there are hundreds/Thousands of strikes.

The most common surges still come from the switching devices of the installations.

45
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GROUND CONNECTION
SURGE PROTECTION 1 2

THE OPERATING PRINCIPLE FOR AN SPD CONSISTS ON SHUNTING THE EXCESS ENERGY OF THE VOLTAGE PEAK
TO GROUND, THUS LIMITING THE VOLTAGE TO A VALUE ACCEPTABLE FOR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT CONNECTED
DOWNSTREAM.

 If the ground is NOT in proper condition, then the equipment may suffer premature wear or
damage.
 If there is NO ground connection at all, then the SPD will not be able to provide any protection at
all.

No earth, no protection

46
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GROUND CONNECTION
EARTH LEAKAGE PROTECTION 3

THE OPERATING PRINCIPLE FOR AN RCD CONSISTS ON COMPARING THE INCOMING VS THE OUTGOING CURRENT IN
A GIVEN CIRCUIT, AND IT WILL TRIP WHEN THE DIFFERENCE IS SIGNIFICANT (EARTH LEAKAGE ABOVE SENSITIVITY
THRESHOLD)

 If there is no ground connection, the RCD will not be able to detect the current leak until somebody
touches the metal housing and an indirect contact occurs , discharging the current through it:
 RCD of 30mA, the person is exposed to an electric shock but the RCD operates
 RCD of 300mA, no current circulates, hence the RCD will not operate. Big danger for people.

No earth, no protection

Equipme
nt

47
What is the GMD / G-CHECK®?

The G-CHECK® is the first ground monitoring device.

Through the loop resistance method, G-CHECK® is able to detect variations in
the measured earth resistance (ohms). These variations may occur in
situations like:

Fortuitous earthing Earthing Material’s stealing

disconnections deterioration

48
G-Check. Loop resistance method

G-CHECK® measurement are based on the loop resistance method

G-CHECK® generates a voltage impulse at the PE terminal and then measures the
current returning through the loop at the Neutral terminal.
Thus, G-CHECK® measures the impedance of the path of a leakage caused by an
indirect contact.
The loop resistance follows a different path depending on the earthing system.

51
WHY Surge-Trap® TERRA ?

The information provided by Surge-Trap® TERRA can be classified into “1,2,3” main benefits:

CONFIRMATION OF PROPER
1 INSTALLATION
When the STP TERRA LED is green, it means that the
protection device is properly wired and powered up.
Green for Go.

2 EFFECTIVE SURGE
PROTECTION
When the STP TERRA LED is green, it indicates that
the ground path is good enough to shunt the energy
peaks to ground effectively. Green for Go.

3 SAFETY INFORMATION IN THE

EVENT OF INDIRECT CONTACT
When STP TERRA cannot detect any ground
connection, it is advisable to check the installation
status.
