Introductory Message

Welcome to Applied Physics!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Aklan and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to
guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Applied Physics Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner.
This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease
the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Applied Physics Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue

learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with
meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform
the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your
facilitator on the agreed schedule.

ELECTRIC CIRCUIT

Learning Competency with Code

1. Identify the parts of the household circuit and discuss their function
2. Draw simple circuit diagram using electrical symbol
3. Recognize simple circuits in the house
4. Identify the components of the circuit and determine the importance of each
component.

Background Information for Learners

An electric circuit is any arrangement of materials that provides a path of

electrons to flow. When you connect an electric fan to an outlet, you are assembling an
electric circuit. Electrons/electric charges flow in electric circuits. In other words, it
needs a complete loop in order for something/device to work. If you break that loop
with a switch, the power stops flowing, and your light bulb (for example) will turn off. A
simple circuit definition is a closed loop of a conductor that electrons can travel
around, usually consisting of a power source (a battery, for example) and an electrical
component or device (like a resistor or a light bulb) and conducting wire.

The components of a simple electric circuit are the following:

1. Source or supply – source of electrons or electrical energy. The source can be a
battery, a photovoltaic panel, or the electric outlet in your room. If it's the latter,
the real source may be a hydroelectric generating station, for example.
2. Conductor/ conducting wire – A material through which an electric charge is
readily available. It is the pathway that electrons follow through the
circuit. Examples are wires and copper traces on circuit boards.
3. Load – Any device which uses electrical energy. It refers to the device that
consumes the energy (converts it to another form). Examples are lights
(converts electrical energy to heat and light), electric motors (converts electrical
energy to heat and rotary motion) and appliances ( convert electrical energy to
other forms of energy)
4. Controlling device or a switch – A device which regulates the flow of electric
charges/electrons. It is the mechanism that is used to start, stop, and regulate
the electric current. Examples are switches and variable resistors

An electric circuit can be opened or closed by turning the switch on and off.
When the switch is off, the circuit is opened thus there is no electric current. When the
switch is on, the circuit is closed and therefore offers a continuous path for the electrons
to flow.

A circuit diagram is a visual display of an electrical circuit. There are mainly two
types of circuit diagrams:

1. Pictorial: Pictorial diagrams are made using basic images. This type of diagram
gives a visual representation to audience which is less technical.

2. Schematic: These diagrams are drawn using standard industrial symbols. They are
used by electricians and electrical engineers to trace electrical connections in
buildings.
