Institute of Engineering & Management Mid Semester Examination - Even Semester 2021
2. a) Analyze a 6-pulse converter without overlap and determine the average voltage. (10)
Or
b) With the help of a schematic diagram, explain the principle of operation of a 6 pulse (10)
converter.
3. a) With the help of waveforms, determine the equation for current in a 12 pulse converter. (10)
Or
b) Develop the complete equivalent circuit of an HVDC link and obtain the expression of (5+5)
current for the DC link.
4. a) Find the superiority of technical performance of HVDC lines to that of EHVAC lines for (5+5)
(i) equal voltage (insulation level) and (ii) equal power losses?
Or
b) Draw a neat single line diagram with proper current flow arrangement of different (7+3)
HVDC links. Why is the bipolar line more commonly used?
5. a) A bipolar DC line of ±100kV is delivering 100MW on the DC side. The power factor on (10)
the AC side of line is 0.9. Estimate the AC side voltage (3 phase) and the corresponding
current ratio. Assume the insulation levels are the same.
Or
b) Estimate the steady state stability of a 1-phase AC line with sending end and receiving (10)
end voltages maintained at 132kV by a synchronous modifier, and when the sending end
voltage is loading by 900 electrical degrees, given the reactance of the line is 10 ohm.
6. a) How HVDC system works and maintains system stability under abnormal condition by (5+5)
some means of specific control? Why pulse frequency control is preferred in modern
HVDC system?
Or
b) An existing 400kv 3 phase AC line transmitting a power of 100 MW is converted into (10)
bipolar DC line. Estimate the DC voltage/pole and DC line losses, if the resistance of each
conductor is 0.01 ohm. Assume p,f=0.90.
7. a) Which factors are very important for designing of HVDC transmission system? Show (10)
and explain the variation of voltage along the line with load when the sending end and
receiving end voltage are held constant.
Or
b) A bipolar two terminal HVDC link is delivering 1000MW at ±500kV at the receiving (10)
end. The total losses in the DC circuit are 50MW. Calculate the following:
(a) Sending end power
(b) Sending end voltage
(c) Power in the middle of the line
(d) Voltage in the middle of the line
(e) Total resistance of the DC circuit
