Gathering Statistical Data
Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Enriched Mathematics Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on

Gathering Statistical Data !
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Enriched Mathematics Self- Learning Module on Gathering

Statistical Data !

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often
used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create
and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an
active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

LESSON

What is Data Gathering?

Data Gathering is defined as the procedure of collecting, measuring and
analyzing accurate facts or information using standard validated techniques.
Collection of data is an important part of Statistics. Data should be collected
in a manner that they are accurate and convenient to use.
Data is a collection of facts or information. They may be gathered by using
the following methods.

1. Conducting Surveys
In conducting Surveys, you may use interview method and the
questionnaire method.
The interview method is done when a person solicits information from
another person. The person collecting the data is called the interviewer, while the
individual furnishing the data is the interviewee.
The questionnaire method is advisable if the survey requires a series of
questions, which the interview method will be very slow to use.
Example: A restaurant Manager requests his /her customers to fill out this
survey to gather their satisfaction.

BLUE RIBBON RESTAURANT

COSTUMER SATISFACTION SURVEY
1. How would you rate our food?
Very Good Good Okay Bad
2. How would you rate our service?
Very Good Good Okay Bad
Sometimes, interview and the questionnaire method combines, such as in
the Census. For example, the Local Government has to provide services or program
to the people of the town, a questionnaire must be prepared. At the same time,
during census the enumerators will conduct interviews to all residences who will be
recipients of the program or service.

2. Observing the Outcomes of Events

Observing the outcomes of events is usually used by behavioural scientist

who are primarily concerned with the behaviour of either an individual or a group
of individuals. The data are gathered either individually or collectively by means of
observation. The person who gathers the data is called the investigator or the
researcher while the person being observed is called the subject.

Example : You want to know the number of motor vehicles that passing along the
street near the school, so to gather the data you will observe it from 8:00 AM. to
9:00 AM.

3. Taking Measurements in Experiments

Taking Measurements in experiments are advised for the following

questions:
1. Will a fertilizer produce more rice?
2. Can sawdust be substituted for sand in the production of hollow blocks?
3. Is it possible to produce paper from the manure of cows?

Whenever you demand to measure in order to collect data in an experiments

this method is applied. Physicist and chemist make use of the experimentation in
gathering information.

Example :
You need to measure the needed mass ( in grams) of fertilizer , if they are
effective in producing more rice.
You need to measure the amount ( in kilograms)of sawdust in replaced to
sand in making hollow blocks.
You need to take measurements of chemicals ( in mL) needed in order to
convert manure of cows as a material for producing paper.

4. Reading Statistical Publication

Reading Statistical Publication is advised if you need to consult records or

history in order to gather data.

Example: The barangay administrator wants to find the number of families who are
greatly affected by the volcanic eruption from Taal Volcano. Since, the activity is
urgent, conducting survey will be very tedious to employ. Consulting to records or
publication is advisable to collect the information required.

WRAP–UP

Remember this:
The first procedure in Statistics is gathering or collecting data. Here are the
ways of collecting sets of data:
1. Conducting Surveys. The interview method and the questionnaire
method can be used in conducting Surveys.
2. Observing the outcomes of Events. It is advised when the investigator
is concerned with the behavior of either an individual or a group of
individual. This is done my means of observation.
3. Taking Measurements in experiments. This is done when you need to
take the volume, temperature, distance , height and other quantities of
objects in order to answer the needed data in an experiment.
4. Reading Statistical Publications. This is advised when you need to
consult records or history.
VALUING

Reflection: (Journal Writing)

In order to answer the problems in research, Statistics is employed.

The first step in answering the problem is to gather data. Without data,
there is no information to be organized, to be presented, to be analyzed and
to be interpreted. That’s why proper method and honest way of gathering of
data is a must because it leads to accurate results. It really starts in your
honesty. How HONEST can you be? In your journal write a short essay
about your Honesty, entitled: How Honest I can be? Write it on a clean
sheet of pad paper.

POSTTEST
