The Abacus
An abacus is a calculating device that was flrst used (0) in
ancient Babylon. It was a very useful calculation tool that played an
important role in trade and commerce. It is the ancestor of the modern
calculating machine (9) the computer.
The (10) abacus was most board or slab made of stone.

Its users probably spread sand on its (11) and traced shapes on the sand
for counting purposes. The word 'abacus' probably comes from the Greek word abakos
(12\ means 'a piece of rectangular board', It's all very different from the modern-day
abacus that is (13) plastic or wood.
As the abacus slowly became something used only for counting, its design changed and
(14) . The sandy surface was replaced by a board marked with lines, which came with
little balls known as counters. These counters could be moved up and down to (15) its
numerical value of ones, tens, hundreds, and so on. The early abacus board was further improved by the
Romans who ensured that the counters could move in (16) lines by including grooves
in the board design.
The abacus was most popular in the sixteenth century as many Asian countries like Japan and
China (17) it widely to do business. It then became less popular when people started
using the decimal points system more widely. Now, the calculator is the preferred choice because it can
(18) show calculations up to a large number of decimal points. Nevertheless, the abacus
still exists to this day as many people still use it to improve their mathematical skills.
