READING TECHNIQUES.

Considering English as a universal language for communications,

especially those of a technical-scientific nature, its reading comprehension
becomes increasingly important and indispensable to keep us updated and
informed. To do this, we will study some techniques for reading and
understanding texts written in English. Below are three commonly used and
very effective reading techniques for your comprehension goal. The
techniques are: Previewing, Skimming and Scanning.

1. Previewing:

This technique consists of a preliminary review of probable reading

material. Such a review may generate a number of ideas that can help us
decide whether the material in question is appropriate and useful for our
purposes and, if so, tell us how to approach it. For the application of this
technique we have several steps, among which are:

• (a) Ask yourself questions related to the title of the material;

trying to hypothesize the content.
• (b) review the name of the author, date of publication and other
information that identifies the work or reading material (this in
order to verify whether the material is relevant or not for our
purposes of reading or searching for information).
• (c) If it is a periodical or book, review the preface or
introduction in order to find relevant information.
• (d) Review the table of contents, index, appendix, etc. to get an
idea of the structure of the work (if it is a book or novel for
example).
2. Skimming:

Es Skimmimg: it is a speed reading technique. It is used with the

purpose of obtaining a global idea of the content of a text. This type of
reading is fast and active, the greater attention of the reading should be
focused on the general idea of the text. For its use certain strategies are
applied such as:

• Locate keywords related to the subject of the text to read.

• Find words that are repeated.

• Find words that are similar to Spanish.

3. Predicting. Before reading a text in detail, you can predict the information
you are going to find and you may know something about the subject, this
can help you anticipate what the content of the text is.

4. Scanning. When you do, you give the text a quick read, but look for
specific words or phrases, we are looking for precise details rather than a
general idea.

5. Guessing unknown words: It is very difficult for you to understand 100

percent of the vocabulary of a text in a second language, especially in the
first reading. Therefore, you have to help yourself with the context, it is
more productive to give a second reading looking for the probable meaning
of a term instead of looking in a dictionary, the second reading will allow
you to form a clearer idea of what the unknown words mean. They are
presenting throughout the text, not only the main ones, but also the
secondary ones.
