Step 1: Go to Khan Academy, to review the three forms of linear equations. Use the
information on the site to answer questions 1 – 3. [Total Points 8 - Points Earned ___/8]
Step 2: Next, we will further explore the three forms of linear equations : Slope-Intercept
Form, Point-Slope Form, & Standard Form. Use the information on the sites to answer
questions 4 – 6. [Total Points 18 - Points Earned _____/18]
4. Slope-Intercept Form:
a. Write the equation of the line whose
slope is 5 and y-intercept is (0, -7).
5. Point-Slope Form:
a. Write the point-slope equation of the
line that passes through (7,3) whose
slope is 2.
6. Standard Form:
a. What is the x-intercept of the line
5𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 10?
3
e. What is 𝑦 − 3 = 4 (𝑥 − 5) in standard
form?
3
Step 3: Go to PHETs Graphing Lines simulation to take a closer look at how to graph linear
functions in Slope-Intercept & Point-Slope Form. Use the site to answer questions 7 & 8.
Questions adapted from https://phet.colorado.edu/en/contributions/view/4870)
[Total Points 24 - Points Earned ___/24]
7. Directions: Select the tab that says “Slope-Intercept” and follow the directions below:
Slope-Intercept Tab
𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃
a) What happens to the graph when you move the c) What happens to the graph when you move
purple dot? the blue dot?
c. Copy the graph from the simulation onto the blank graph provided below
4
8. Directions: Select the tab that says “Point-Slope” and follow the directions below:
Point-Slope Tab
𝒚 − 𝒚1 = 𝒎(𝒙 − 𝒙1)
a) What happens to the graph when you move the c) What happens to the graph when you move the blue
purple dot? dot?
b) What happens to the equation 𝒚 − 𝒚1 = 𝒎(𝒙 − 𝒙1) d) What happens to the equation 𝒚 − 𝒚1 = 𝒎(𝒙 − 𝒙1)
when you move purple dot? when you move the blue dot?
c. Copy the graph from the simulation onto the blank graph provided below

Step 4: Without using the simulation describe how you would graph the linear functions
below. Then, graph the lines on the blank grids provided. Finally go to Desmos to confirm
you graphed questions 9 & 10 correctly. [Total Points 20 - Points Earned ___/20]
9. Describe how you would graph a line with the equation 𝑦 = 15𝑥 + 20. Then, graph it on the
blank grid provided below. Finally go to Desmos to confirm you graphed the equation
correctly.
10. Without using the simulation describe how you would graph a line with the equation
𝑦 − 35 = 15(𝑥 − 1). Then, graph it on the blank grid provided below. Finally go to Desmos
to confirm you graphed the equation correctly.
6
Step 5: Analysis, use the information you gathered to help you answer questions 11-13.
Please make sure you use complete sentences to answer each of the three questions below.
[Total Points 10 + 5 (Bonus Question) - Points Earned ___/15]
11. What do you notice about the lines in question 9 and 10? How are the equations
𝑦 = 15𝑥 + 20 and 𝑦 − 35 = 15(𝑥 − 1) similar? How are they different?
12. Why do you think 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃 is called Slope-Intercept form? (Hint: what does m
represent, what does b represent?) Why do you think 𝒚 − 𝒚1 = 𝒎(𝒙 − 𝒙1) is called
Point-Slope form?(Hint: what does x1 and y1 represent, what does m represent?)
13. BONUS: Try and Come up with context to describe the linear function 𝑦 = 15𝑥 + 20.
