Seeing as I am making music videos based upon music by dodie I'll be filming things
that relate to the lyrics so I'll be drawing attention to a lot of things so I could use
focus to ensure people notice certain items. I have one item that I might use as the
main item in ‘she’ so I would need to make sure people notice that it is more
important than the other items the film will show, I will make it look important in the
way I film it. It will need to be included a lot within the filming as well as it being an
item that people's focus gets pulled too.
The meaning behind my project is to bring songs that have a deep connection to
who I am, to more of a visual through the medium of film.
It'll be a window to who I am as a person. I chose film over photos because I think
that having the song playing alongside the visuals will help the viewers to be
conscious of my feelings and my connection to the songs.
I could use lots of close-up shots so that people can understand/ infer the intimacy of
my feelings that the song talks about.
Music video 1- ‘she’

Music video 2- ‘Rainbow’

Reading between the lines
I was given a task about what my project conveys between the lines. One
of the songs that I am using is about the feeling of being in love but also
getting your heartbroken because the other person doesn't feel the same. I
looked for quotes from the musician as I thought that quote would have
more significance to the project seeing as I am using her music.
Quote-
“This is what you are, this is why you're feeling these things." (Clark,
2019).
I have taken the quote from a larger quote from a BuzzFeed article where
dodie talks about her songs and I felt like this sentence supports my idea
for this project.
Image- related to the project, I chose this over other images because it
displays love and also hurt which has a direct association to the song ‘she’
that I am using. The hurt is displayed in the words but also in the fact that
the paper is scrumpled up as if the person was angry. It's also in their
handwriting which is more personal and expressive. For a part of my music
video, I'll be using an envelope addressed for the person I have feelings for
but they don’t love me back so I will show rage in burning the letter, I will
also be using video calls to show the story line and the last one gets left
unanswered and in a fit of rage I will slam the laptop closed and walk away.
When I revisited this piece of work, I realised I was reading more into ‘She’,
so I decided to find an image related to the song ‘rainbow’. Dodie's song
rainbow is about being queer and feeling lost. She explores themes
through her lyrics that paint queer people as outsiders and in the wrong
and as the song progresses it changes to feeling proud of being a part of
the LGBTQ+ Community.
I saw a few images that I could have used but this image impacted me the
most. It's showing a perspective that has been deemed ‘wrong’. LGBTQ+
people have been portrayed for a long time as bad people but at the end of
the day love is love no matter what.
Reappropriation of imagery and disruption of signs
I chose these images as they are from one of my favourite series and dodie is my favourite
musician. I took a still from a tv show (The Haunting of Bly Manor) where two characters are
surveying the damage done to some flowers and I added in another person to change the
context because the tv show is based in the 80’s and the person I added in is from a different
time, era. The new meaning is only small; there is no link between the three people in the
new image. dodie does not belong in the image like Dani and Jamie do. By knowing the
actual scene and seeing this edited image, I can comfortably say that the meaning goes
from a private interaction between Jamie and Dani to a moment that has been interrupted by
someone who does not belong. dodie is in the background like she is lurking.
Dodie in the Harry Potter scene.
After the first edit I decided to try again with the same prospect but with something more
well-known, Harry potter.
Even though dodie breaking the fourth wall as the other characters are looking at Hagrid but
she isn't. Maybe I could have chosen another image of her that could have gone better.
However, I believe I have changed the context behind the image because everyone knows
that dodie didn’t play any character in Harry Potter, so it has people questioning why she's
there.
Dinosaur in front of Bly manor

Again, I chose this still from Bly manor because it is one of my favourite things to watch and I
chose the dinosaur because I am obsessed with t-Rexes, and I thought it would add a
comedic effect to the original image. It also looks unrealistic because dinosaurs are extinct
therefore wouldn’t have been in an area with a building as they were extinct before people
were around.
The original image’s meaning would be a view of the setting of a story and the new meaning
has a sense of danger and fear because there is a dinosaur there now.
I decided to include this in my blog alongside my final major project as its about how different
things in images can change the meaning and throughout my filming, I will be thinking about
what things mean depending on their context.
