MAPEH-ARTS
Quarter 4 - Module 1
Elements and Principles of Design
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each
lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need
to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check
your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that
you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they
can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercise and tests.
Read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What is It

Elements and Principles of Design

Elements of design refer to what is available for the artist /designer or any person
willing to communicate visually, while Principles of design describe how the elements could
be used.

Elements of Design

Color, value, forms, shapes, space and texture are called the elements of design.
These elements are known as the fundamentals for all works of art. Without these elements
art could not be created. All of these elements exist in the world around us in nature and in
the environments we create for ourselves every day.

Elements of Design Example

The smallest and most basic element.
It can vary in size and can be used
alone as a unit in a group.
Point/Mark

It is a form with width and length but no

depth. It may be horizontal, vertical,
Line diagonal, straight, curved, dotted,
________ broken, thick or thin.

Defined as area that stands out from

the space next to or around it due to a
defined or implied boundary. It is
Shape formed when a line encloses an area.
Square, circle, rectangle and triangle
are examples of shapes.

Described the volumes and mass, or

the 3D aspects of objects that take up
Form space.

The area around, within or between

images or parts of an image relates to
perspective positive or negative space.
Space

3
Refers to the wavelength of light.
Properties of color.
1. Hue is the name of the color.
Color 2. Value refers to lightness or
darkness of hue.
3. Intensity refers to the purity of the
hue also known as “Chroma”.

Refers to the surface quality. The feel,

appearance, thickness, hardness or
Texture
stickiness of a surface.

The Principles of design are the rules by which an artist uses the elements of design.
The most often used principles in visual arts are pattern, contrast, emphasis, rhythm and
variety. These principles may vary slightly according to the person using them.

Principles of Design Example

It is often described as a regular
arrangement of alternated or repeated
Pattern elements (shapes, lines, colors) or
motifs.

The juxtaposition of different elements

or design on order to highlight their
Contrast differences and/or create visual
interest, or a focal point.

Special attention or importance given

to one part of the content.
Emphasis

The arrangement of elements to give

the viewer the feeling that all the parts
Harmony
of the piece form a coherent whole.
