Dear Student

Welcome to Module DRC1501: Chemical Engineering Drawing I.

This tutorial letter serves as a guideline to this module and provides you with general
administrative information as well as specific information about the module. Please read through
this tutorial letter carefully as it contains valuable information about this module.

Because this is a fully online module, you will need to use myUnisa to study and complete the
learning activities for this module. Visit the website for DRC1501 on myUnisa frequently. The
website for your module is DRC-20-S2.

As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that Unisa has implemented a transformation
charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to this charter, we have also placed
curriculum transformation high on the agenda. For your information, curriculum transformation
includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching
and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the infusion of African
epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be integrated at both the
programme and module levels, as a phased-in approach. You will notice the implementation
thereof in your modules, and we encourage you to fully embrace these changes during your
studies at Unisa.

1 INTRODUCTION TO THE MODULE

Welcome to the module Chemical Engineering Drawing (code DRC1501), offered by the
Chemical Engineering section in the School of Engineering at Unisa. This module is delivered
fully and only online. Go to the website at https://my.unisa.ac.za and log in using your student
number and password .

The online study material for this module consists of Tutorial letter 101 and a study guide(under

1.1 Purpose

Engineering drawing is a formal and precise way of communicating information about the shape,
size, features and precision of physical objects, and accurately and unambiguously captures all
the geometric features of a product, a component or engineering plant. The end goal of an
engineering drawing is to convey all the required information that will allow a manufacturer or
engineer to produce that component or plant.

1.2 Outcomes

For this module, you will have to master several outcomes related to the knowledge area of
Chemical Engineering Drawing I ( code DRC 1501):

(1) Understand drawing, dimensioning, sketching, lettering, uniformity and standardisation,

instrument drawing.

(2) Drawing techniques: oblique drawings, isometric drawings, orthographic projection and
auxiliary views, sectional views and introduction to assembly drawing.

1.3 ECSA Graduate Attribute

To satisfy ECSA Graduate Attribute (GA 6),

Graduate Attribute 6: Professional and technical communication

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing within an engineering context.

• Audiences are engineering peers, academic personnel and related engineering persons
using appropriate formats;
• Methods of providing information include the conventional methods of the discipline, for
example engineering drawings, physical models, bills of quantities as well as
subjectspecific methods.

2 LECTURER(S) AND CONTACT DETAILS

2.1 Lecturer(s)

The primary lecturer for this module is Mrs Molebogeng Nkobane.
