SECTION-1 (ATTEMPT ANY 4)

QUE-1 Give the advantages and disadvantage of Riveted and Welded joints. (5MARKS)
QUE-2 Explain ‘Fillet Weld’ and Butt weld. What is effective thickness in these two
welds(5MARKS)
QUE-3A double riveted double cover butt joint in plates 16mm thick is made with 20mm
rivets at 80mm pitch. Calculate the pull per pitch length at which the joint will fail and also
its efficiency. (5MARKS)
QUE-4 A single riveted lap joint is used to connect 12mm thick plates by providing 20 mm
diameter rivets at 50mm pitch. Determine the strength of the joint and efficiency. Taking
work stress in joint= 80N/mm^2. Working stress in bearing in rivets= 250N/mm^2 and
working stress in axial tension in plates is 0.6fy. Where fy= 260 N/mm^2. (5MARKS)
QUE-5 Determine the load which can be transmitted per pitch length of a joint connected by
a 24mm diameter shop rivets at 100 mm pitch. The thickness of main plates and cover plates
are 16 mm and 12 mm respectively. Take allowable tensile strength of plates equal to 100
N/mm^2 and allowable stress in bearing for rivets equal to 300 N/mm^2. Also determine the
efficiency of the joints. (5MARKS)
SECTION-2 (ATTEMPT ANY 3)
QUE-6 A single riveted lap joint is used to connect plate 10 mm thick. If 20 mm diameter
rivets are used at 55 mm pitch, determine the strength of joint and its efficiency. Working
stress in shear in rivets=80 N/mm2 (MPa). Working stress in bearing in rivets=250
N/mm2 (MPa). Working stress in axial tension in plates=156 N/mm2. (10MARKS)
QUE-7 Two plates 16 mm thick are joined by i. a double U butt weld, ii. A single U butt
weld. Determine the strength of the welded joint in tension in each case. Effective length of
weld is 150 mm. Allowable stress in butt weld in tension is 142 N/mm2. (10MARKS)
QUE-8 Two plates 120 mm x 10 mm are overlapped and connected together by transverse
fillet weld to transmit pull equal to full strength of the plate. Design the suitable welding.
Allowable stress in the weld is 110 N/mm2. Allowable stress in tension in the plate is 0.6
fy N/mm2. (10MARKS)
QUE-9 Design a lap joint to connect two plates each of width 100 mm, if the thickness of
one plate is 12 mm and the other is 10 mm. The joint has to transfer a working load of 100 kN. The
plates are of fe 410 grade. Use bearing type of bolts and draw connection details. (10MARKS)
