1 INTRODUCTION
This document is the Relocation of deep ground bed document which contains the design calculation, drawings, data
sheets, installation procedure, testing and commissioning for the relocation of the existing deep ground bed GB1 to
protect the existing piping associated with the 4th LPG train in ZCINA plant in Hassi Messaoud, Algeria.
1.1 Scope
The Scope is to provide the design calculation, bill of materials, drawings, data sheets, installation procedure, testing
and commissioning for the relocation of the existing deep ground bed GB1.

2 DESIGN
The existing deep well ground bed GB1, associated with the existing CP system, is installed within the new Booster
Area. The ground bed has a total depth of 102 m which consists of an inactive section (from surface to 12 m deep)
and an active section 90 m long.
Due to the proximity of the existing ground bed (GB1) to new pipe to be installed within the Booster Area (~1 m), the
complete ground bed will be relocated to 100 m outside the fence.
Since a 90 m section with 10 no. anodes (each 1 m long) is not efficient – around a third of the whole “active” section
will be actually discharging CP current into the soil – the relocated deep ground bed will keep the same number of
anodes but across a shorter active section. Refer to Section 3 for the Bill of Materials, Section 4 for the materials data
sheets and to Section 5 for the drawings.
The total anode ground bed (active) length is calculated with the following formula:
𝐿𝐿 = 10 ∗ 𝐿𝐿𝐴𝐴 + (9 ∗ 𝑑𝑑𝐴𝐴 ) + 𝑑𝑑𝑈𝑈 + 𝑑𝑑𝐵𝐵
Where,
LA = MMO Anode Length 1 m
The minimum number of anodes is calculated based on the maximum current output for each individual anode using
the following formula:
It
An =
Ia
Where,
It = Total Current 50 A

COMPANY’S DOC. NO. EPC001-00-CE-EU-CPC-00028
The deepwell groundbed resistance is calculated using the following Modified Dwight’s Equation from Control of
Pipeline Corrosion 2nd Edition, A.W. Peabody. The water resistivity is assumed based on CPCL extensive experience
of deep well groundbeds in the area of ZCINA plant.
ρ 8L
RGB = 1.4 * ln − 1
2.π .L d
Where,
Finally, the quantity of cokebreeze is calculated. There must be sufficient present to allow for consumption during the
life of the groundbed:
The mass is calculated using:
𝜋𝜋 = Pi 3.142
L = Groundbed Length 43 m
r = Groundbed Radius (diameter/2) 0.125 m
CBd = Cokebreeze Density (for Loresco SC3, 1185 kg/m³
see Section 4.3)
Mtot = Mass of Cokebreeze 2,501 kg
It is then confirmed that this number is more than or equal to the weight of cokebreeze required based on the
consumption rate. This is calculated using the following formula:

6 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
All installation works associated with the Cathodic Protection system shall be conducted in accordance with this
procedure and the appropriate design drawings (see Section 1.3 for list). Any conflict between this procedure and the
drawings and / or other project specifications and drawings shall be brought to the attention of the CP Engineer in
writing for clarification as soon as it is discovered.
All installation works shall be supervised by a CP engineer that shall be as a minimum a NACE CP 2 certified or similar
and demonstrate at least 8 years relevant experience. The Sub-contractor shall issue for approval to Contractor the
CV of the certified supervisor in CP.
This procedure assumes that the borehole for the deep well ground bed has been drilled and lined as required (i.e.
steel/conductive casing in the active section and coated steel/non-conductive casing in the inactive section). Prior to
ground bed installation, the location shall be checked as indicated on the design (see section 1.3 for relevant
document list). Drilling of the borehole is outside the scope of the CP Vendor and an approved procedure shall be
sought from the relevant Sub-contractor.
Prior to installation of the anodes, these shall be physically checked for any damages and the cable tails shall be holiday
tested.
For the ground bed installation, the following method shall apply:
• The anode chain is ‘flaked out’ on the ground.
• It is advised to prepare anode assembly (anodes marked at specified spacing, vent pipes are coupled
and tied at regular intervals, centralizer) as one unit and then lower the whole assembly inside the bore
hole. Once the anode assembly has been lowered inside the bore hole, coke breeze slurry can be
poured.
• A soft lifting strop is attached to the anode chain at distance from the bottom of the end weight equal
to the height that the crane/excavator will lift.
• The anode chain is lifted so that the end weight is off the ground and placed over the borehole. The
distance from top of the borehole and the first anode is shown on the relevant drawing.
• The first section of vent pipe (slotted) is held vertically above the deepwell and the first anode is cable
tied 1.5 m up the pipe. The anode cable is cable tied, not the anode.
• The anode centraliser is attached to the cable just above the anode.
This document is Tecnimont’s/Sonatrach’s property and cannot be used by others for any purpose, without prior written consent
COMPANY’S DOC. NO. EPC001-00-CE-EU-CPC-00028
• The anode and vent pipe are lowered until the top of the first section of vent pipe is just above the
deepwell. Under no circumstance the anode cable shall be used to lower the anode and vent pipe
assembly.
• The second section of vent pipe is attached (threaded coupling) and the anode chain cable tied to it.
• The second section of vent pipe is lowered until the top of vent pipe is just above the deepwell. The
anode cable tail shall be fixed to the vent pipe every 2 m using tie-wraps.
• The above process is repeated until the strop is 1 m above the borehole.
• The anode chain is then supported by a temporary support bar and the strop removed.
• The strop is reattached to the anode chain at distance from the borehole equal to the height that the
crane/excavator can lift.
• The anode chain is lifted so that the weight is off the temporary support bar and installation continues
as before.
• The above process is repeated until vent pipe is on the bottom of the borehole.
• The anode chain is then supported by a temporary support bar and the soft strop removed.
• The coke breeze backfill shall be installed after the installation of the anode string and vent pipe.
• Coke breeze shall be pumped. To avoid bridging of the coke breeze, it shall be fluidized with water to
form a slurry (the minimum amount of water shall be added to form a pumpable slurry acceptable to
the installation Sub-contractors equipment) and shall be pumped into the borehole from the bottom
up.
• The coke breeze shall be pumped in stages as described above until it reaches the required level (refer
to installation drawing).
• Forty-eight (48) hours after filling the borehole the level of coke breeze shall be measured and topped
up to the specified height above the top anode.
• The total quantity of coke breeze backfill required to encase the anodes up to the desired level is
normally calculated prior to installation, however a quantity may be lost during pouring activities, this
discrepancy shall be made up to the desired level.
• The remainder of the borehole shall be filled with gravel or imported backfill as specified to a depth of
100 mm below ground level.
• The ends of the cable shall be identified with a semi-permanent identification label.
• The location of the buried cable shall be initially marked (with a wooden stake) on the surface and GPS

7 COMMISSIONING PROCEDURE
The purpose of the commissioning procedure should be used to show that the installed systems operate as specified
and that the required design criteria have been met.
The Commissioning check lists included in Sections 7.1 and 7.2 shall be completed and these will form the basis of the
Commissioning report.
The commissioning procedure for the relocated deep ground bed shall include as a minimum the following:
• Activating the cathodic protection systems (TRs shall be energized one by one).
• Measurement of current and voltage from transformer rectifier.
• Output modes of transformer rectifiers after the completion of commissioning.
• Measurement of current at anode circuits (with shunt or clamp meter).
• Apparent anode resistances and overall circuit resistances.
• AC voltages at structures before and after commissioning.
• Standard forms for recording commissioning results (Sections 7.1 and 7.2).
A commissioning report will be prepared by the CP Engineer, which shall include all commissioning results. The report
shall include a discussion of the results obtained giving conclusions. The commissioning report shall be signed by
VENODR, TCM and OWNER.
