The states of stresses on a rock specimen are given in Figure 1. Calculate the
following:
• Major and minor principal stresses and the orientation of the planes on which
they act. Determine the angle of rotation of the principal planes.
• Maximum shear stress and the orientation of the plane on which it acts.
• Stresses on a plane inclined 30 degrees clockwise from the horizontal plane.
