General Instruction:

All questions are compulsory.

-------------------------------------------

1. State the number of significant figures in the following 1m

a) 6.25x1034 b)86400

2. Give an example where the velocity of an object is zero but its acceleration
is not zero. 1m

3. A drop of olive oil of radius 0.25mm spreads into a circular film of radius
10cm on the water surface. Estimate the molecular size of olive oil. 2m

4. A body travels the first half of the total distance with velocity V1 and the
second half with velocity V2 . Calculate the average velocity. 2m

5. The nearest star to our solar system is 4.29light years away. How much is
this distance in terms of parsecs? How much parallax angle this star shows
when viewed from two locations of the earth six months apart in its orbit
around the sun? 2m

6. The velocity V of a particle depends on time t as : V = at2 +bt + c, where V is

in m/s and t is in second. What are the units of a, b and c? 3m

7. In an experiment, refractive index of glass was observed to be 1.45, 1.56,

1.54, 1.44, 1.54 and 1.53. Calculate a) Mean absolute error b) Relative error
c) Percentage error. 3m
8. A motorboat covers the distance between the two spots on the river in 8h
and 12h downstream and upstream respectively. Find the time required by the
boat to cover this distance in still water. 3m

9. A car accelerates from rest at a constant rate a1 for some time, after which
it decelerates at a constant rate a2 to come to rest. If the total time elapsed is
‘t’ second, then calculate a) the maximum velocity attained by the car,
b) the total distance travelled by the car in terms of a1, a2 and ‘t’. 3m

10. a) Obtain an expression for the centripetal force ‘F’ acting on a particle of
mass ‘m’ moving with velocity ‘v’ in a circle of radius ‘r’. Take dimensionless
constant k=1. 3m

b) Mention any two limitations of the method of dimensional analysis (with

an example each) 2m
