This paper used the descriptive survey in research to obtain reasons and effects
of the absences in the academic performance of the learners as well as the
interventions done by the school to address this problem. The study revealed that most
of the respondent were eight years old and implies that the age is appropriate to the
ideal age of the Grade III learners. This implies that the majority of the respondents
were males. The majority of the respondents live 500 m from the school. The majority of
the respondents have the average grade of 83-88 this implies that the majority of the
respondents have good grade.
The majority of the respondents have below 10 absences or good attendance yet
many still have more than 10 absences. This implies that the majority of the
respondents are willing to attend classes. The majority of the respondents’ absences
are due to illness. This implies that the Grade III learners are prone to sickness. The
majority of the respondents get low scores during quizzes. This implies that the majority
of the respondents cannot cope up with the lessons missed immediately. The majority
of the respondents’ parents are requested to come to school. This implies that
requesting the parents of the respondents is a way in addressing the problem in
absenteeism. On the basis of the findings, illness the main reason of absenteeism in
Maslog Elementary School. And as a result, the learners will get low scores during
quizzes. It concluded that when learners tend to skip from classes their academic
performance will be affected.

Chapter 1
The success of the school in carrying out its primary charge of educating and
socializing learners is contingent on learners attending school regularly. In recognition
of the importance of regular school attendance to quality education, attendance
becomes a priority goal (At-Risk youth in Crisis Handbook, 1993).
Educators have long emphasized the importance of class attendance. Only in the
classroom may the learners hear the teacher’s presentation, participate in class
discussions, and enjoy the benefits of spontaneous interactions between the learners
and teacher. It comes as no surprise that learners with high absence rates earn lower
grades than learners with better attendance (Redick and Nicoll 1990). It was found out
that over three-fourths of school failure rates were explained by the attendance rate
(Fleming and Zafirau 1992).
Absenteeism has been a problem for years. It cannot be separated from the
individual who was called a learner. This absence of phenomena is easy to see even
likened it has become a necessity in the nature of learners. So it is not surprising if this
habit continues to fall among the learners.
All learners yet for one reason or another at one time or other time want to miss a
day of school. The general tendency to engage in such unwillingness is referred to
absenteeism. Through the given information stated above, it is absolutely described that
absenteeism is a premier problem which must be addressed incontinently. According to
Dekalb in 1999, the amount of time actually spent in the classroom is in direct
correlation to a learners access to education. Students who are not in class have fewer
opportunities to learn the material that enables them to succeed later in school (Epstein
& Sheldon, 2002). Learners who attend classes regularly have the higher knowledge
but learners who skip classes may have the lower knowledge. When the learners are
always absent, they will miss the lecture or lesson which they should learn on that day.
One of the early warning sign for future problems that badly affect learners
achievements if when the teacher would not conduct attendance. Conducting an
attendance would help the teacher identify the number of absences of the learners.
There is still a need to address pupils attendance (Smith, 1998). Before addressing the
problem of the learners’ low attendance, we should identify first the reason why those
learners’ are absent in order for us to find out the exact solution for this problem.
According to Teasley in 2004, he noted numerous risk factors that contribute to
learners’ absenteeism such as family work and health, income, poor school or the
environment and community attitudes towards education.
Family is one of the biggest factor that leads to this problem. The encouragement
of the parents are much appreciated to increase the self-esteem of the learners.
Parents should give support, show affection and monitor their children everyday
including their life in school. Children with unhealthy family relationships that were less
accepting and ineffective in discipline and had higher levels of conflict were more likely
to become chronically absent (Kurdek, Fine and Sinclair, 1995). Even this kind of factor
has big impact to why learners tend to absent. A significant relationship between school
absenteeism and delinquency has been identified (Reimer and Smink, 2005). In another
study, it was noted that parents’ education levels contribution to learners absenteeism
(Henry,2007).
Environment is also a factor in this problem. Teachers always prioritize the things
that surround to his/her pupils inside or outside the school. It should be conducive to
learning and should easily catch up the attention of the learners. These make the
learners more aggressive to learn and listen to the lesson that motivates them not to
absent.

THE PROBLEM
The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that cause the absenteeism
of the Grade Three learners in Maslog, Elementary School for School Year 2017-2018.
1.1 Age?
1.2 Sex?
4. What are the interventions done by the school to address the problem of
absenteeism?
5. Based on the findings, what policies can be proposed to address the problem
about absenteeism?
This study is vital to all those concerned in making education considering that
absenteeism of the learners greatly affects the academic performances.
The findings of this study will benefit the following:
Teacher. So that they can inform the parents of their pupils the unpleasant
effects of absenteeism towards the behavior of their children.
Parents. To make them realize that they were very much responsible for their
children’s attendance in school.
Researchers. If ever they will conduct future studies related to this problem.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design
In connection to this study, the researchers asked permission from the teachers.
Explanation was provided about the purpose and the significance of this study.
The sample population for these research was drawn from Grade Three learners
at Maslog, Elementary School during the year 2017-2018 located at Maslog, Danao
City. The selected learners of Maslog, Elementary School included Grade Three
learners with below 10 absences in a year. This learners were considered to have good
attendance. If a learner was absent 10 days in one or more of his class, he is
considered to have poor performance. In determining the learners attendance we asked
from the cooperating teacher the record of the learners’ attendance in the School Form
2.
The most logical and accurate method of finding out why learners are having
attendance problems in school is to ask them. As one investigative writer on the subject
of poor school attendance wrote, “Researchers must begin to ask the learners why they
are not coming to school…”
Figure 2
Figure 2 illustrates the schematic flow of the study, which covers the entire
research activities. The input stage stated with the survey questionnaire, interview
profile of the respondents. It is followed by the process stage which includes statistical
tool using simple percentage. The last stage is the output which covers the proposed
intervention plan.
Research Environment

This study is focused only to the Grade Three learners of Maslog Elementary School of
Maslog, Danao City Cebu.
Research Respondents
The respondents of the study were the Grade Three learners of Maslog
Elementary School.

The number of respondents was taken from the actual interviews of the school
which were perceived by the school head or principal. The percentage of the number of
respondents was also determined through computation using simple percentage and
results are as follows: Grade III-Pearl with 50% and Grade III-Coral with 50%.
Research Instrument
The various instruments used in this research were a survey questionnaire, the
School Form 2 (Daily Attendance Report for Learner) and the Final Grades in Academic
subjects of Grade Three Learners in the year 2017-2018.
The questionnaire consists of the learner’s profile, five different reasons for
absences, and the effects of absences in the academic performance. Learners will
check the reasons which caused them to be absent from class and its effects in the
academic performance. The questionnaire was administered by the researchers on a
one-to-one basis. In all cases, learners were asked to be honest and to ask questions if
there was something in the survey that they did not understand. It was explained that
the survey was very confidential and the results would not be revealed without the
learners name anonymous. Most learners were very cooperative in completing the
survey and appeared to be conscientious and sincere in the efforts.
The researchers utilized the School Form 2 where they can distinguish who
among the learners misses classes. To determine if absenteeism can greatly affect the
learners’ performance, the learners make use of the Final Grade of the Grade Three
Learners 2017-2018.
3. Computers. The other relevant data was gathered through reading books and
internet surfing.
Research Procedures
Gathering of Data
The steps to gather the data started by sending letters to the principal and staff of
Maslog, Elementary School, asking permission to conduct a survey. During the conduct
of the survey, the researchers guided the learners in answering the questionnaire and
address the uncertainties raised by the learners. Then, the researchers asked copies of
the School Form 2 (Daily Attendance Report of the Learners) and the final grades in
academic subjects of the Grade Three Learners in the year 2017-2018. The data were
retrieved and tabulated for analysis.

SUMMARY
This study was conducted to determine the factors that lead learners to avoid
going to school in Maslog Elementary School for School Year 2017-2018. Furthermore,
it also helped in identifying the effects of absenteeism in the academic performance.
Moreover, it distinguishes the various interventions done by the school to address the
problem of absenteeism. Out of 60 learners in Grade III only 50 were set as
respondents of this study, 17 females and 33 males. It is 83% of the total population of
Grade III.
The study focused on the Grade III learners of Maslog Elementary School. It
dealt with the factors that cause absenteeism of the learners. Also, it tackles the
significance of the learners’ profile specifically the age, sex and proximity to school.
Furthermore, the study was limited only with two sections of Grade III in Maslog
Elementary School namely Pearl and Ruby. A descriptive research methodology was
used in the study. A survey was administered to a selected from a specific population in
Maslog Elementary School. Survey was used to gather data from the Grade III learners’
age, sex, proximity to school, reasons and effects of absences in the academic
performance and interventions done by the school to address the problem of
absenteeism. The survey used proper questions and interview to gather the needed
data. The statistical test was used in the interpretation and analysis of the collected data
that were the bases for proper actions.
FINDINGS
Out of 60 learners in Grade III only 50 learners were set as respondents of this
study, 17 females and 33 males. It is 83% of the total population of Grade III. The profile
of the respondents showed that 86% has the age of 8. It indicated that most of the
respondents were of the same age bracket that is appropriate to the ideal age of a
Grade III learner, which helped them interact easily with each other.
The reasons of the absences showed that 86%of the respondents’ absences are
due to illness. It implies that the Grade III learners are prone to sickness. The effects of
the absences showed that 88% get low scores during quizzes. It implies that majority of
the respondents cannot cope up with the lessons missed immediately. The interventions
done by the school showed that 90% of the respondents’ attentions were called by the
teacher for three consecutive absences.
CONCLUSION
Based on the findings, illness was the main reason of absenteeism in Maslog
Elementary School. As a result, learners get low scores during quizzes. Therefore,
when learners tend to skip from their classes their academic performance will be
affected.
