Document The purpose is to help you to perform the approaches you will practice
purpose during ADV C module using FMS through some basic scenarios.
How to Use This document consists in a set of exercises, which you can run on
your trainee tablet.
Practice
General Data
Objective:
This scenario aims to perform an approach using FMS. The approach will lead either to an
automatic landing or to a go-around procedure.
You can either load directly the HOLDING LFBD-ETPAR Lesson Plan, or train yourself with
FMS Preparation and Takeoff sequence seen in Auto Flight Practice courses.

Introduction During holding at ETPAR, we are informed that the procedure in use at
Bordeaux is ILS 23.
APPROACH PREPARATION
When established on the holding at ETPAR, load ILS 23 approach via ETPAR on F-PLN
page of the MCDU:
Check that displayed ILS frequency, course and slope are the ones published on the Chart.
Check the Navigation Accuracy (the procedure will be seen later in the course). As required,
you can also use the field to enter the runway threshold “LFBD23”.
Fulfill APPR page and enter minima (in QNH, in BARO field) according to the approach
plate:
Notes:
- Check on FMA that minima are set.
- Even if there is no wind, enter 0/0.
- Set Landing Configuration (CONF3 or FULL).
On GO-AROUND page, set (if necessary) EO ACC altitude according to the Chart, missed
approach procedure part (“Climb to 1,000’ prior to level acceleration”).
Copy Active F-PLN and update as required (circling, runway change …).
APPROACH PROCEDURE:
STEP 1:
When ready, (assuming you are cleared to leave holding) press the vertical revision key
adjacent to “IMM EXIT” line (2R key) on the F-PLN Page to exit the holding and to proceed
BD902:
STEP 2:
Assuming ATC clears you; descend to 3,000 ft. Engage LS pushbutton to display ILS
indications on PFD and check ILS IDENT (that is normally done passing FL100 in descent).
STEP 3:
After BD902, you are cleared by ATC for ILS approach runway 23. Arm approach mode
through FCU pushbutton to enable the engagement of LOC and G/S modes.
Then engage the second AP for CAT III DUAL approach and check FMA indications.
STEP 4:
To configure the aircraft before landing, you have to decelerate it. Deceleration can be
done through two ways:
- Either overflying magenta deceleration point*,
- Or activating approach phase through PERF Page.
By default, deceleration point is set for a decelerated approach (aircraft stabilized at 1,000ft
AAL).
Passing deceleration point, aircraft will decelerate with Slats/Flaps extension**. For ILS
approaches, we perform a decelerate approach: it means that we extend
Slats/Flaps/Landing gear during final descent.
**
Configuration Speed target
Clean Green Dot speed
F1 S speed
F2 F speed
F3 F speed or Vappr (if F3 in Approach Perf page)
Full Vappr
STEP 5:
When Glide-slope Star mode engage (GS*), set the go-around altitude (published on
Charts) on the FCU in order to prepare the go-around phase.
AUTOMATIC LANDING:
When the aural message “RETARD” is played, or “THR IDLE” is indicated on FMA,
Set thrust levers to IDLE and monitor automatic landing until aircraft stops.
Note: When touchdown, set Max Reverse until 70 kts then reset thrust levers to REV IDLE
and at taxi speed, IDLE.
GO-AROUND:
STEP 1:
- Push thrust levers to TOGA detent and retract one step of flaps (the call out is “Go-
around, Flaps”).
STEP 2:
Reduce Thrust Levers to CLB detent. Arrange to have NAV mode active on the FMA.
Finally, follow F-PLN and proceed to holding at ETPAR before performing a new approach.
Comply with speed and altitude constraints published on Charts.
STEP 3:
STEP 4:
APPROACH PREPARATION
(For this approach, an early stabilized approach is performed)
When established on the holding at ETPAR, load VOR 23 approach via VAGNA on F-PLN
page of the MCDU:
Manually force BMC VOR on VOR1 and VOR2 and set final approach course (229°) as
written on the Chart. Select the two ADF/VOR selectors on VOR mode on the EFIS CP.
To configure the aircraft before landing, you have to decelerate it. Deceleration can be
engaged through two ways:
- Either overflying magenta deceleration point*,
- Or activating approach phase through PERF page.
*Deceleration point is magenta in managed lateral mode (NAV, LOC) and is white, and so
inactive, in selected lateral mode (TRK, HDG).
By default, deceleration point is set for a decelerated approach (aircraft stabilized at 1,000ft
AAL).
To early stabilize the aircraft for this approach, set the VAPP speed (which can be get on the
PERF page) as a constraint speed (vertical revision key) at the Final Descent Point (here,
FD23) to upstream the deceleration point
STEP 1:
When ready, press the vertical revision key adjacent to “IMM EXIT” line (2R key) on the F-
PLN Page to exit the holding and proceed to VAGNA through the DIR page.
STEP 2:
Passing VAGNA, you are cleared to descend to 3,000 ft and for VOR approach runway 23.
- Set selected heading.
- Engage BIRD to perform manually the descent.
- Set ROSE-VOR ND mode to follow VOR deviation.
STEP 3:
As the managed mode is no longer engaged, activate approach phase (through PERF Page)
to decelerate your aircraft passing deceleration point. Start configuration of the aircraft 5NM
before FDP as follow:
- FLAPS 1 at 5 nm
- FLAPS 2 at 4 nm
- Landing Gear at 3 nm
- FLAPS 3 at 2 nm
- FLAPS FULL and FPA -3,0° displayed (but not pulled) at 1 nm
- FPA -3,0° pulled at 0,3 nm
STEP 4:
As the descent goes on, monitor altitude comparing with published altitudes on the Chart.
STEP 5:
When descent has started, set the go-around altitude (published on Charts) on the FCU in
order to prepare the go-around phase.
GO-AROUND:
(Identical than ILS exercise)
APPROACH PREPARATION
(For this approach, an early stabilized approach is performed)
When established on the holding at ETPAR, load RNAV 23 approach via ETPAR on F-PLN
page of the MCDU:
For these types of approaches, RADNAV page should be checked only to ensure no
spurious data are loaded.
Check the Navigation Accuracy (The procedure will be seen later in the course). As required,
you can also use the field to enter the runway threshold “LFBD23”.
This step is identical than previous approaches. Be sure minima entered are the ones of the
RNP APCH approach type. Here we are performing a LPV approach so, minima will be
491ft.
APPROACH PROCEDURE:
STEP 1:
When ready, press the vertical revision key adjacent to “IMM EXIT” line (2R key) on the F-
PLN Page to exit the holding and proceed to BD902 through the DIR page.
STEP 2:
Passing BD902, you are cleared to descend to 3,000 ft and for RNAV approach runway 23.
STEP 3:
After BD902, you are cleared by ATC for RNAV approach runway 23. Arm approach mode
through FCU pushbutton.
STEP 4:
When descent has started, set the go-around altitude (published on Charts) on the FCU in
order to prepare the go-around phase.
STEP 5:
As the descent goes on, monitor altitude comparing with published altitudes on the Chart.
GO-AROUND:
(Identical than ILS exercise)
It is important to have the F-PLN sequenced in the FM as you fly an approach in order to
recover the NAV mode in case of Go-around.
- In case of selected mode, (TRK/HDG, if you are RADAR Vectored for example), you
have to do it by yourself:
o Either by clearing manually all the lines above the final descent point or,
o By inserting a direct to final descent point with the RAD IN option (radar
opposite of the final course). Caution, inserting a DIR TO arms NAV mode in
selected mode (TRK/HDG). Think to cancel it by pulling HDG knob to avoid
spurious interception.
