1.0 SCOPE
This specification provides the acceptable levels of noise for rotating and reciprocating
equipment, viz. fans, blowers, compressors, turbines, gear boxes, electrical motors,
generators etc. installed in the process complex and production facilities. The contents of this
document pertain specific to acceptable levels of noise for different rotating and reciprocating
equipments, and therefore this document can be used in conjunction with other equipment
specifications and standards. This specification does not cover requirement for living quarter’s
noise limit.
Information on equipment with restrictions deviating from this specification shall be given, as
required for each individual case on the requisition or order.

2.0 REFERENCED PUBLICATIONS

Following codes and standards form a part of this specification. In addition to compliance to
the contents of this specification, vendor shall comply with contents of the latest editions of
these codes and standards as applicable.
a) The Engineering Equipment and Material Users Association (EEMUA), Publication No.
140, “Noise Procedure Specification”.
b) The Engineering Equipment and Material Users Association (EEMUA), Publication No.
141, “Guide to the Use of Noise Procedure Specification”.
c) Department of Energy (U.K.). “Offshore installation guidance on design and construction”,
July 1977, Part II Section 5.9.

3.0 DEFINITIONS
Noise Limit is defined as the overall/ maximum permissible sound
pressure level.
Sound power Level is defined as 10 log (W/W 0) in decibel where W is
sound power in watts and W 0 is the reference sound
power of 10-12 watts.
Sound Pressure Level is defined as 20 log (p/p0) in decibel where p is
measured sound pressure N/m2 and p0 is the reference
sound pressure of 2 * 10-5 N/m2.
Overall sound pressure level is defined as the ten times the log of sum of the linear
sound pressure value of octave band centre
frequencies.

Octave Band Centre Frequency is defined as the preferred centre frequency for noise
measurement.
Impulse Noise When a noise contains significant irregularities, such
as bangs, clanks, or thumps, or if the noise is only
existent momentarily and is of a character to attract
attention, then it shall be considered as impulse.
Narrow Band Noise when a noise contains a pure tone or narrow band
component which is noticeable to the ear as a noise
distinguishable pitch, and which represents a dominant
feature, then it shall be considered as narrow band.

5.1 Basic Sound Pressure Level Limit

Unless otherwise specified on the requisition, the sound pressure level limits shown in the
Table 1 shall be met at any measuring location at 1.0 metre distance from the equipment
surface. The procedure for sound pressure level measurement shall be adhered to the
section 2 (a) (EEMUA, publication No. 140) of this specification.

The sound pressure levels shown in the table 1 shall be suitably corrected by subtracting the
corresponding values listed in section 5.2 when the equipment to emit annoying
characteristics such as impulse or narrow band noise.

5.2 Additional Restriction To Basic Limit

The sound level mentioned under section 5.1 shall be reduced by the stated value below for
the each of the following conditions.
Table: 2 Impulse and Narrow band noise reduction

Condition
63 125 250 500 1K 2K 4K 8K

Narrow band noise (dB) 0 0 0 4 6 7 7 3

Alternatively, reduce overall noise limit by 5 dBA for both impulse and narrow band noise.

6.0 INFORMATION TO BE SUBMITTED BY THE VENDOR

The vendor shall provide the following information. The noise levels quoted shall relate to the
equipment normal operating condition and any other design or expected mode of operation.
1. The maximum and average sound pressure level at 1 metre from the equipment
surface (in dB and octave bands). The position of the maximum sound pressure level
shall be defined.
2. The sound power level in dB and in octave bands of the equipment.
3. Details of how the information in 1 and 2 has been derived. These shall include full
information on the noise test such as reading taken and any correction applied,
measurement positions with dimension sketch, test environment and operating
conditions. The basis for extrapolation if any shall also be given.
4. Any characteristic noise components such as narrow band or impulse noise shall be
specified.
5. Recommendations for the noise control of the equipment to meet the prescribed noise
limits.
6. Details of noise reduction features included in the equipment.
7. A guarantee stating maximum sound pressure and power levels of the equipment in
dBA and in octave band centre frequencies, which will not be exceeded by the
equipment.
