How to Start a Career in Real Estate

Real estate is a career with significant rewards and many challenges. If you think becoming a
real estate agent seems like a lucrative idea, then you are not alone. Even after the effects of
COVID-19, over $33.1 billion of residential real estate was sold in 2020.
Getting started as a real estate agent is simple. Ultimately, it comes down to three day-to-day
functions: representing buyers, representing sellers, and building business.

Getting Licensed
There are a few basic requirements to get licensed as a real estate agent. You must:
1. Be at least 18 years old
2. Have legal U.S. residency
3. Complete your state’s requirements for pre-license education
4. Pass your state real estate license examination
Many licenses can be acquired in less than a week and generally cost less than $1,000.

Choosing a Brokerage
Before choosing a real estate broker, it is essential to ask yourself: What kind of company do I
want to work for? How much support do I need/want from my coworkers? A brokerage can
provide:
 A brand to be affiliated with
 Business cards
 Signage
 Resources and training
 A managing broker that can guide your career

Joining the National Association of Realtors

While a state real estate license will give you the right to sell real estate, you cannot call yourself
a real estate agent until you join the National Association of Realtors and agree to their
regulations. Though it isn’t necessary to join, most real estate brokers will require it. It also gives
you access to additional databases that have homes listed for sale.

Building Business Through Contacts

Initially, your contacts will be family and friends. It is essential to network and build a web of
clients and potential consumers. Ask your current contacts to spread the word among their
friends. You should also be sending out an announcement of your new business through your
social media channels.

Developing Professional Image

Most real estate customers only interview one agent to sell their home. This means when the
opportunity comes and you meet potential clients, you need to make a good impression, so they
choose you. Real estate is an image-based business, and these potential clients will make quick
decisions of whether or not you are a good fit for them. You should have professional photos of
yourself and a professional website. These small details will give your company a good
impression.
