Dear Ms. Meldrum,

I am writing to you to discuss a student of mine. This student, Michael Rodriguez,

is a first grader. He is currently enrolled in my class and I have noticed that he is starting
to struggle to learn the curriculum. Michael does not like to read aloud and hardly ever
turns in his assignments. I asked him the other day why he wasn’t turning in the
homework and he ignored the question. Also, I asked his parents the other day and
realized his parents had no idea what I was asking them. I began to realize that Michael
is Hispanic and is an ESL student.
I am hoping with your help, we can create a 504 plan under the law of Lau v.
Nichols. From what I remember, the Lau v. Nichols case was all about creating laws to
help students who struggle with English as a second language. Michael is one of these
students. He needs help with instruction and I am hoping I can offer that for him.
My goal is to create a safe and healthy learning environment for Michael. Michael
needs a few accommodations in order to succeed in my classroom. These
accommodations include extended time on homework, creating more group work and
allow more instruction between his ESL instructor and I. I hope that with the help from
Michael’s ESL instructor the both of us can figure out the best way to teach the material.
Also, if there is a possibility we can provide instructions for Michaels parents so they
can help us at home that would be greatly appreciated. I hope that you can also provide
us with materials and accommodations when we need them.

Thank you for your time,

Christie Maggi
