Answers - Algebra Word Problems – Lesson 11, Worksheet 11, Algebra Word
Problems Involving Quadratic Equations

Problem 1) One number is 3 more than another number. The product of

the two numbers is 54. What are the numbers?

Solution:

Let 𝑥 represent the smaller number. Then the larger number is 𝑥 + 3:

𝑥(𝑥 + 3) = 54

𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 = 54

𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 54 = 0

Factor the quadratic expression:

(𝑥 + 9)(𝑥 − 6) = 0

𝑥 = −9 or 𝑥 = 6

Therefore, the numbers could be −9 and −6 or 6 and 9.

Answer: −9 and −6 or 6 and 9

Problem 2) If the product of two consecutive even numbers is 168. What are
the numbers?

Solution:

Since the two numbers are consecutive even numbers, let one number be 𝑥 and
the second number 𝑥 + 2. Write an equation showing that their product is 168.

𝑥(𝑥 + 2) = 168

𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 = 168

𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 168 = 0

(𝑥 + 14)(𝑥 − 12) = 0

𝑥 = −14 or 𝑥 = 12

The two numbers could be −14 and−12 or 12 and 14.

Answer: −14 and−12 or 12 and 14

Problem 3) One positive number is four more than another number. If the
square of the smaller number is 2 less than 3 times the larger number. What are
the numbers?

Solution:

Let the first number be represented by 𝑥. The other number is 𝑥 + 4. Write an

equation using the given information:

𝑥 2 = 3(𝑥 + 4) − 2

𝑥 2 = 3𝑥 + 12 − 2

𝑥 2 = 3𝑥 + 10

𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 − 10 = 0

(𝑥 − 5)(𝑥 + 2) = 0

𝑥 = 5 or 𝑥 = −2

If 𝑥 = 5, 𝑥 + 4 = 9; 𝑥 2 = 25 and 3(9) − 2 = 25.

Answer: 5 and 9

Problem 4) Five less than the square of a number is 44. What is the number?

Solution:

Interpret the key words in the problem, convert the sentence to an equation, and
solve it:

𝑥 2 − 5 = 44

𝑥 2 − 5 + 5 = 44 + 5

𝑥 2 = 49

√𝑥 2 = ±√49

𝑥 = ±7
