Installation Guide Battery Monitor ~Symmetry Kit 351497.033, Issue 1.1e, 2008 Aug 3
1. Introduction
The Battery Monitor ~ Symmetry Kit enables you to decentralize and increase the number
of battery symmetry measurements in your Smartpack based DC power supply system.
Also, it monitors the battery compartment temperature using the built-in sensor.

About this Guide

This booklet provides you with the required information for installing the Battery Monitor
~ Symmetry Kit.
You must also read the Installation Guide Battery Monitor CAN Bus Node, Art.
351507.033. This booklet provides you with the required information for installing the
Battery Monitor, CAN Bus Node in your Smartpack based DC power supply system. The
booklet also presents the Battery Monitor’s technical specifications.
For more detailed description of the Battery Monitor Module, read the “User’s Guide
Smartpack Monitoring and Control Unit”, Art. 350003.013.
For description of how to activate and configure the Battery Monitor ~ Symmetry Kit using
the PowerSuite PC program, refer to the PowerSuite online Help system.

Before You Begin

Requirements
You can use the Battery Monitor ~ Symmetry Kit if your DC power system meets the
following requirements:
1. The system’s Smartpack controller has firmware version 2.03 or higher installed
Version
2. You have a PC with PowerSuite application version 2.3 or higher installed
Sensitive

Recommended Tools
Standard equipment used by an authorized electrician. NOTE: All tools must be insulated.

Safety Precautions
Follow these precautions during installation, commissioning and general handling of
Smartpack based DC power supply system.

CAUTION: For safety reasons, the commissioning and configuration of the equipment is
only to be performed by Eltek’s personnel or by authorized and qualified persons;
otherwise the warranty may be invalidated.
Qualified
personnel Please, read the user documentation carefully before installing and using the equipment,
as installation and operation is to be performed as described in it.

WARNING: The batteries represent a major energy hazard. To avoid short-circuit of

battery poles, you must always remove metallic objects — uninsulated tools, rings,
Electric
shock watches, etc. — from the vicinity of the batteries.

3. Fixing the Battery Monitor Module

Battery Fuses OFF!
1. Switch the battery fuses OFF
o Switch OFF or remove all battery fuses or circuit breakers
2. Attach the Battery Monitor to a battery block
o Use the Velcroue adhesive tape on the bottom of the module. The location
of the module is important, for the built-in temperature sensor to monitor the
battery temperature accurately. For more exact measurements, attach the
monitor on the front of a battery block. If not possible, you can fix it on the
side of the outer battery block, or on top, or on the cabinet’s inner side wall.

4. Connecting the Battery Symmetry Wires

Battery Fuses OFF!
Refer to the Installation Guide Battery Monitor CAN Bus Node (Art. 351507.033) for
information about location of connectors and switches, connection drawing and battery
symmetry connections.
1. Connect the battery symmetry wires to the Battery Monitor
o Connect one end of the symmetry wire to the monitor’s input terminal, pin 1
o Repeat the step above for the other symmetry wires (pin 2, 3 and 4); as described in
the guide 351507.033 referenced above
2. Fasten cable lugs to the other end of the symmetry wires
o Select and fasten to the wires, cable lugs with size suitable for your battery
terminals
3. Connect the cable lugs to the battery terminals
o Connect the symmetry wire lugs to the battery terminals; as described in the guide
351507.033 referenced above

5. Connecting the CAN Bus Cable
Battery Fuses OFF! Controller ON!
Refer to the Installation Guide Battery Monitor CAN Bus Node (Art. 351507.033) for
information about CAN Bus termination and connection drawing.
Note that the Smartpack controller may indicate CAN bus alarms during installation.
1. Connect one end of the CAN bus CAT5 cable to the Smartpack
o Release the Smartpack controller’s spring mechanisms and slide it out of the shelf;
; as described in the guide 351507.033 referenced above
o Remove and keep the RJ45 CAN bus termination plug from the controller’s rear
CAN port
o Plug one end of the CAN bus CAT5 cable in the now spare controller’s CAN port
o Insert the Smartpack controller in the shelf, and lock the handles
2. Connect the other end of the CAN bus CAT5 cable to the Battery Monitor
o Route and fasten the CAN bus CAT5 cable from the controller’s rear and to the
battery compartment where the Battery Monitor is attached
o Plug the other end of the CAN bus CAT5 cable in one of the Battery Monitor’s
CAN port
3. Terminate the CAN bus
o If the Battery Monitor is the last node on the bus, connect the RJ45 CAN bus
termination plug — that you removed from the controller — into the other
monitor’s CAN port.
Otherwise, connect the next Battery Monitor’s CAN bus CAT5 cable

6. Configuring the Battery Monitor Module

Battery Fuses OFF!
Refer to the Installation Guide Battery Monitor CAN Bus Node (Art. 351507.033) for
information about DIP switch addressing the Battery Monitor and the Smartpack.
Read also the PowerSuite application’s Online Help for information on how to configure
the CAN Bus nodes.
1. Assign ID addresses to the Battery Monitor module(s)
o For each Battery Monitor, set the DIP switches position as specified in the guide
351507.033 referenced above
Power is ON!
2. Switch the battery fuses ON
o Switch ON all battery fuses or circuit breakers
o Reset possible alarms that the Smartpack controller may indicate
3. Use PowerSuite to activate and configure the Battery Monitor(s)
o Connect a PC and configure the Battery Monitor(s), using the PowerSuite
application. Read the PowerSuite application’s Online Help
