What kinds of applications are described here? What business functions do they support?

How do they improve operational efficiency and decision making?

Answer: The kinds of applications that are described in this case study are as simple as e-mail,
calendar, photo sharing, and text messaging applications used for MEDITECH electronic medical
records system, ChainLinq Mobile. These types of applications help employees stay better kept up
with each other and business information. The e-mail application allows employees to receive e-
mails almost directly after they are sent. Apps make the employees control their work easily and
help them to fix complex things. These applications support business functions such as
communication, collaboration teamwork. These applications improve operational efficiency and
decision-making by allowing users to communicate wherever and whenever. Users can instantly
receive information and data, which allows them to make better, faster decisions

The MEDITECH application gives doctors the ability to look at things like medical records and
results whenever they need. Basically, all the applications described help support business
functions like timeliness and punctuality. ChainLinq helps to track shipment information.
Therefore, Applications help decision making faster, more correct and convenient for company

information being communicated in businesses. This allows the businesses to operate faster and
helps decision-making be done. Company can save money and time through using these
applications by Keeping all that information in the cloud, and instantly accessible from any
location through an app, streamlines any task requiring customer data.

QUESTION 2

Identify the problems that business in this case study solved by using mobile digital devices

One thing that all of these businesses had in common was that they used the email, messaging
and contact apps in mobile devices to communicate with each other and handle most of the work
operations remotely.

Let's start with Doylestown Hospital. As this community medical had hundreds of doctors
working as a mobile workforce under it, it was hard to provide them access to the medical
records of the patients in a secure way. Similarly, it was hard to deliver them time sensitive
emails in case of medical emergencies and the doctors often couldn't get access to the patients'
lab results quick enough to diagnose them in time which was a grave problem. In addition,
maintaining continuous contact between the doctors and sharing sensitive data of this kind kind
was a bit of challenge without the availability of a proper server which stores this information
and creates a medium from where it can shared Using iPhone apps helped them to solve this
problem through providing doctors access to MEDITECH's electronic medical records and
database from where they can interpret lab results through Epocrates Essentials.

Secondly, D.W. Morgan, a supply chain consultant and transportation and logistics service
provider was facing the issues that there was no proper way to track the delivery of the
shipments and the collection of the signatures manually at each step was a time consuming task
and the customers who go for the option of JIT delivery often do not have much time to spare so
it was a problem. They had to continuously contact the supplier to know about the whereabouts
of their shipments. The problem was solved by creating an app ChainLinq which incorporates
electronic signals and a GPS system to not only reduce the time taken to collect signatures but
also allows both supplier and customers to track the shipment.

TCHO wanted to produce unique chocolate flavors while being aware of what goes on in the
FlavorLab and keeping its employees connected at all times at work. It was done by developing
an iPhone app which allowed them to keep track of temperature, time, etc. and all things which
needed to be tracked to create these unique flavors and tracking the operations of FlavorLab.
Similarly, other features like email, messaging, etc on the phone allowed the employees to be
better connected and exchange photos.

What kinds of businesses are most likely to benefit from equipping their employees with
mobile digital devices such as iPhones, iPads, and BlackBerrys?

Answer: Almost every kind of business can benefit from equipping their employees with mobile
digital devices. Particularly those, which require dealing with a handsome amount of data and
information and then using various tools and techniques to properly interpret the data, are likely
to benefit with the use of these technologically advanced devices. Also the businesses which
require a secure and efficient communication among the employees and clients are also likely to
benefit by the use of iPhones, BlackBerrys and other similar devices. These digital phones
provide a secure communication channel line which will verify the authentication of the
organization’s employees and clients accordingly. This would be especially usefull when
business are dealing with a crisis. The use of these devices would allow the specialist to
immediatly deal with the problem whenever and wherever they are. Through these devices
people can share business ideas, graphs, inventory, sales, etc.

The supply and chain management business firms are also likely to benefit with the use of these
devices. This can easily be supported by the use of certain applications or strategies ( like Just
InTime) on these Smartphones.

The business involving sophisticated problem-solving tools and techniques can also be benefited
where every employee can apply all these tools easily on his own digital mobile device.

QUESTION 4

D.W. Morgan’s CEO has stated, “The iPhone is not a game changer, it’s an industry
changer. It changes the way that you can interact with your customers and with your
suppliers.” Discuss the implications of this statement.

iPhone surely changes the way company can interact with its customers and suppliers. DW
Morgan is managing its operations efficiently in 85 countries remotely because of the easy-going
facilities iPhone offers. Being a supplier and providing JIT service requires extreme efficient and
quick work which can hardly be managed manually. Through iPhone features the company was
able to develop a customized app called Chainlaq Mobile on which its drivers can collect
shipment information, signatures and record GPS tracking information on its delivery packages.
Through iPhone the driver's devices, company's server and company's website are synced
together. So the delivery information is available simultaneously to the customers and the
company which helps avoid miscommunication and mismanagement.
The Active Sync technology of iPhone has made it an industry changer, making the management
of corporate business an extremely efficient task. This technology of iPhone has made
connectivity between customers and suppliers or manufacturers and machinery extremely
productive and efficient. Its feature that let companies develop customized software’s is also
very helpful. So iPhone has made it easy not only for DW Morgan to keep record of his drivers
and shipments but also helped a great deal of customers and retailers to keep track of their
deliveries and orders so the whole industry gets benefitted in a short time.
