Study Of Cable Crimping

INTRODUCTION

In This Activity We Have Studied About The Cable Crimping Technique. We

Have Discussed Here About Crimping Tool Which Is Basically is a device that
is used to make cold weld joints between wires and a connector through
deforming one or both of them to hold the other. A special connector is used to
join metals together. The weld joint properties (mechanical and electrical) are
strong as the parent materials when the tool works and offer some result, which
is known as crimp. An instance of crimping is to affixing a connector to the end
of a wire. For example, a crimping tool is used to create phone cable sand
network cables to combine RJ-11 and RJ-45 connectors to both ends of the
phone or Cat 5 cable.
We Have Studied About The Use , Objectives , How The Crimping
Tool Works , Crimping LAN Cables like Straight Through Cable , Crossover
Cable and Rollover Cable According To Their Color Coding.
CRIMP TOOL
This tool is used to attach the connectors to the cable. Typically, this tool also
includes a wire-cutter and wire-stripper. So if you buy a crimp tool, you don't
have to buy a wire-cutter and wire-striper separately.
The following image shows a crimping device equipped with a wire-stripper
and wire-cutter.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

To use this crimping tool, each wire is first placed into the connector. Then, the
connector with wires are placed into the crimping tool, and the handles are
squeezed together. Crimping punctures the plastic connector and holds each of
the wires, allowing data to transmit through the connector.
OBJECTIVE OF THE CRIMPING TOOL
To attach a connector with a network cable or the end of a phone is the
main objective of the crimping tool. The most common connectors, RJ-11 and
RJ-45 that can be attached to the end of a cable. These connectors are more
important for cable and can be attached to the cable with the help of a crimping
tool. The flat rocks, hammers, or other improvised tools are used by many
homeowners for attaching the connectors to the cables, but it can be led to bad
quality or failure. Combining two metal pieces together with the help of
deforming one of them is the primary function of the crimping. For use, with the
help of attaching a connector on the wire, it prepares a phone cable or a
network. The wire that is previously ripped with another particular tool.
The connector is a very important part of the crimping, which prevent the wires
from falling out, and helps to transmit data to the wires. If anyone uses the
wrong tool, it can become the reason for more damage. There are many
different kinds of crimping tools available, but they all have the same function.
The built-in ratchet crimping tool is considered the best crimping tool that helps
to prevent the jaws from breaking. The ratchet releases the crimped part when it
gets the required pressure-the ratchet ensuring that enough pressure is applied
and helps to improve the efficiency significantly.
Furthermore, the main purpose of designing the crimping tool with a wider jaw
is to cover bigger surface areas. The operators require to match the wire size and
the terminal size to crimp a cable with crimping. Once the terminal size and the
wire size are matched, the operator will be able to strip the wire.
On the basis of the length of the connector, it is decided how much wire will be
removed. The cable and connector are inserted into the crimping tool after the
wire is ripped and fitted into the connector. For squeezing the connector with
the wires together, the operator presses the handles, and finally, they firmly
connect together.
The connector and the cable will hold together where a great force is pulling
them and he crimping procedure is carried out. Make sure the crimping has not
been done correctly if the connection is pulled apart. Operators need to check
the goodness of the crimp before installation, which helps to prevent
incompletion when the connector and cable are installed.

CRIMPING LAN CABLES

Ethernet cable types
There are 3 types of Cables.

1. Straight Through Cables

If we want to connect two different types of device then we can use straight-
through cables.
For example:
a. Connecting a router to a hub
b. Connecting a computer to a switch/router
c. Connecting a modem to a router
Straight-Through refers to cables that have the pin assignments on each end of
the cable. In other words, Pin 1 connector A goes to Pin 1 on connector B, Pin 2
to Pin 2, etc. Straight-Through wired cables are most commonly used to connect
a host to a client. When we talk about cat5e patch cables, the Straight-Through
wired cat5e patch cable is used to connect computers, printers, and other
network client devices to the router switch or hub (the host device in this
instance).

2. Crossover Cables
If we want to connect two same types of device then we can use crossover
cables.
For example:
a) Connecting a computer to a computer
b) Connecting a router to a router
c) Connecting a switch to a switch
d) Connecting a hub to a hub
Crossover wired cables (commonly called crossover cables) are very much like
Straight-Through cables with the exception that TX and RX lines are crossed
(they are at opposite positions on either end of the cable. Using the 568-B
standard as an example below, you will see that Pin 1 on connector A goes to
Pin 3 on connector B. Pin 2 on connector A goes to Pin 6 on connector B, etc.
Crossover cables are most commonly used to connect two hosts directly.
Examples would be connecting a computer directly to another computer,
connecting a switch directly to another switch, or connecting a router to a
router. Note: While in the past, when connecting two host devices directly, a
crossover cable was required. Nowadays, most devices have auto-sensing
technology that detects the cable and device and crosses pairs when needed.

3. Rollover Cables
This cables is used to connect computer to router’s console port.It is also called
as console cable or host cable.

Rollover wired cables, most commonly called rollover cables, have opposite Pin
assignments on each end of the cable or, in other words, it is "rolled over." Pin 1
of connector A would be connected to Pin 8 of connector B. Pin 2 of connector
A would be connected to Pin 7 of connector B and so on. Rollover cables,
sometimes referred to as Yost cables are most commonly used to connect to a
device's console port to make programming changes to the device. Unlike
crossover and straight-wired cables, rollover cables are not intended to carry
data but instead create an interface with the device.

Ethernet Cable Type

In computer networks, Cat-5, Cat-5e, and Cat-6 cables are mostly used. UTP
cables are connected by RJ45 connectors.
Cable Type and Speed
CAT 3 16Mbps
CAT 5 100Mbps 1000Mbps (4 pairs)
CAT 5E 1000Mbps
CAT 6 Up to 400MHz for super-fast broadband applications
Cat 7 cabling is also known as Class F.
We will use “Cat 6” cables for now
Crimping tool rj45

1)  rj45 Plug/Jack

2)  Ethernet cable

3)  LAN wire cutter

4)  rj45 Crimping tool
5)  rj45 Network LAN cable tester
HOW TO MAKE ETHERNET CABLE
1. Take your LAN Cable and strip the outer cover be carefully in doing this or
else the internal wire will be damage.

2. There will be 4 pair of twisted wire.

3. Unwind the twist cable and make it straight and cut the edge of wire.

4. Trim all the wires to the same length

5.  Insert the wires into the RJ45 plug – make sure each wire is fully inserted to
the front of the RJ45 plug and in the correct order

6. Now your LAN cable is ready you may now test the cable sing LAN tester.
Note :
T568A and T568B are the two different colour codes used for pairing cable.
T568B is mostly used one.
WRONG WAY

WRONG WAY - Note how the blue

plastic sleeve is not inside the
connector where it can be locked
into place. The wires are too long.
The wires should extend only 1/2
inch from the blue cut sleeve.

WRONG WAY - Note how the wires

do not go all the way to the end of
the connector.

CRIMPING A STRAIGHT THROUGH CABLE :

Arrange all wire in the below manner and cut the edge ,be careful in doing
so.Both end of cable must have same sequence of colored wire, please refer the
below image.
Both End of wire arrangement in cable is same.

Now insert the cable into jack and then crimp the cable using crimping tool
So now we crimped one side of the cable.so we can repeat the step for another
side of cable.

CRIMPING A CROSSOVER CABLE :

Arrange the cable as shown in below image .
Both End of wire arrangement in cable is different.

Now insert the cable into jack and then crimp the cable using crimping tool
So now we crimped one side of the cable.so we can repeat the step for another
side of cable.
Now cable is ready to use,You can test your cable using ” LAN Cable Tester”
too.
