How to get your
public Library card
- online

1. Students under the age of 13 need permission


from a parent/guardian.
2. New Users can register online for a VIRL public
library card using the link found here:
https://virl.bc.ca/get-help/get-a-card/.
3. The following information is needed to get your
card - your name, parent/guardian name,
-Birthdate
-Home address
-Email address
-Desired password
-What kind of card you would like
-virtual number
-Solid card (must be picked up -in person)

That is all it takes to get your hands on a FREE


card.

Graphic Novels

Graphic novels are an outstanding way to support our school reading goals, make
connections between self and text, and foster a joy of reading.

Graphic novel's support the way readers learn through sequential art which
relies on the readers ability to visually compare images and text between
multiple panels. Having visual images also supports readers to pause and absorb
information in a way that reflects their literacy needs! (Karp 35).

Graphic novels also support storying: an idera where readers feel connection and
personal immersion between themselves and the text through
-Compelling visuals
-Clearly outlined environments
-Features and characters that appear similar (Sturm 60).

Graphic Novel of the Month


Our graphic novel of the month is Spark! Written by
Ian Boothby, and Nina Mastsumoto is the illustrator.

August and Charlie are two cats that pilot a


mechanical dog suit in order to help others and save
the world from an evil Baby, named Princess. Ian
Boothby is a Canadian Author and this book is
available on the Mr. M’s “Check it Out!” shelf in our
LLC!

Reading Aloud
Conversations, Connection, and Comprehension

Reading aloud, with an adult and or peers has significant benefits to promote lifelong
reading and enjoyment of text. Below are 3 ways to consider reading aloud, and how we
can support our learners on their lifelong reading journey!

1. Students listening adults read Listening to


others read aloud models flow, punctuation,
and helps students understand the rhythm of
reading text.

2. reading with a partner, individuals can ask


questions, make inferences, and promotes sharing
personal related experiences that create authentic
deep learning (Beauchat and Blarney 9).

3. “Students of all ages enjoy a good picture book, none of them is too
old to enjoy read-aloud time” (Ansberry and Morgan 10).

BC Summer Reading Club
Spy Academy - Are You Ready for Your Mission?

Our local Lancouver Island Regional Library Branches are proud to promote and support the
BC Summer Reading Club 2021! This years theme is Spy Academy!

What is it?

An even more fun way to read in the summer!

-Ages 5-12 are eligible to sign up


-Students pick up reading materials from the local branches
-Access to reading logs and goal setting material
-Readers earn digital badges!

Why Read in the Summer?

Research shows that even just two months off from regular reading can result in lower
reading ability, comprehension of text, and other reading skills--this is commonly referred to
as Summer Slide (Jaclyn Dynia et al 3).
