Carrying Capacity
Carrying capacity is the cause of stop in population growth as it reaches the maximum number of
organisms that can be supported by the environment.
The amount of resources available in which organisms live has different carrying capacity in every area.
It is understandable to its previous topic on limiting factors that predator population will eventually reach carrying
capacity there will not be enough prey for all of the predators in the population, since the predators compete for
their resources of their prey. As the number of prey decreases, so will the number of predators, because there
is no enough food to sustain them. Also, in emigration, it happens when a population reaches its carrying
capacity.A population experiences a period of rapid growth before it reaches its carrying capacity. This is called
exponential growth. Plenty or resources are available at this period therefore; more births are recorded than
deaths of organisms.
The figure below illustrates exponential growth and logistic growth.

When resources are unlimited, population exhibit exponential growth resulting in a J-shaped curve. When
resources are limited, population exhibit logistic growth. In logistic growth, population expansion decreases as
resources become scarce, and it levels off when the carrying capacity of the environment is reached, resulting
in a S-shaped curve.

EXAMPLE: How many deer were in the population in 1 year? Answer: 1000 deers

ACTIVITY: Predict me!

Instruction: Determine what will happen to the organisms based on the graph presented below.

1. 2 years?_____________ 4. 6 years?_____________ 5. 12 years?____________

2. 3 years?_____________ 3. 5 years?_____________
