Assignment
DC Machines

1. A 4-pole dc shunt motor working on 220V dc supply takes a line current of 3 A at no load while
running at 1500 rpm. Determine the speed when the motor takes a line current of 50A.
Assume armature and field resistance as 0.2Ω and 400Ω respectively.

2. A shunt generator has an induced voltage of 250V. When the machine is loaded, the terminal
voltage drops down to 230V. Neglecting armature reaction, determine the load current, if the
armature resistance is 0.04Ω and the field circuit resistance is 150Ω.

3. An 8-pole lap connected armature has 40 slots with 12 conductors per slot, generates a voltage
of 5000Volts. Determine the speed at which it is running if the flux per pole is 50 mWb. Also
calculate the terminal voltage at full load of 20A if the armature resistance is 0.5Ω and the
machine is running as shunt generator having a shunt field resistance of 250Ω.

4. A 50 kW belt driven shunt generator is running at 300 rpm and delivers rated load to a 250V
bus-bar. The armature and shunt field resistances are 0.025Ω and 50Ω respectively. Suddenly
the belt breaks and the machine continues to run as a motor taking 5kW from 250Vbus-bar.
Find out the speed of the motor allowing brush drop of 1Vperbrush.

5. The armature resistance of a 220V DC series motor is 0.1Ω and series field resistanceis0.1Ω.
When it is running at 500 rpm it draws 80A. Calculate the speed of the motor where it draws
40A. Assumed the field is unsaturated.
