Physics Advanced Level with subject code 0780 comprises of three examination papers: Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3. At
the Physics Advanced Level, candidates will be tested on:
A. Paper 1
It comprises of 50 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) each carrying two marks making a total of 100 marks. The
paper is written in one and a half hour and its weighting is 30% of the entire Physics Advanced Level Paper. Of
the Fifty questions in this paper, five questions will be testing knowledge and comprehension (10%), ten
questions on application (20%), 15 on analysis (30%), 15 on synthesis (30%) and five on evaluation (10%).
B. Paper 2
Paper two Physics Advanced Level shall be made up of eleven questions:
Section 1 (25% of entire exam) – 1 hour
- Five compulsory short questions (30 marks)
- One pair of long either or –type question (20 marks)
The paper will be written in two and a half hours for 100 marks and its weighting will be 50% of the entire Physics
Advanced Level Paper. Of the 11 questions in this paper, 11% shall be testing knowledge, % on comprehension,
on Application, on Analysis, on synthesis and, on evaluation.
C. Paper 3 (Practical)
- School Based Assessment (Physics Laboratory Manual and Field work project) which will carry 20 marks and
shall weigh 5% of the entire Physics Advanced Level Examination Paper. A local examiner appointed by the
CGCE Board will assess candidates’ practical books.
- Practical Test to be written during the normal June session. This exercise will be conducted in two hours and
it will carry 80 marks which is 15% of the entire Physics Advanced Level Paper. Four questions from four
stations will be set; each to be done in 10 minutes and candidates will rotate through in 40 minutes. A
mainstream practical test to be done in 1 h 20 min. Candidates will be provided with instructions on how to
carry out the practical test.
Physics Paper three carries a total of 100 marks making 20% of the entire Physics Advanced Level Paper. Ideally, the
weighting shall be 5% on knowledge, 5% on comprehension, 15% on application, 35% on analysis, 20% on synthesis and
20% on evaluation.

The objective of the following exercise is to determine the centre of gravity using the principle of moment
2. using the disposable plastic cup provided, attach 50g mass to the metre rule underneath the 80 cm mark
3. By means of a thread, suspend the second 50g mass at a distance x from the zero end of the metre rule. Adjust
the position of the 50g mass until x is 15cm
4. Balance the loaded metre rule on the knife edge. Note and record the distance y of the knife edge from the zero
end of the rule

Arrange 2 parallel thermometers t1 and t2 on a table, so that they are about 2 cm apart and their bulbs protrude about 3
cm beyond the edge of the table. Wet the bulb t2 completely with liquid provided and monitor the two thermometers
for 30 seconds. Then after, fan them continuously with your question paper or answer booklet for 30 seconds
