Water Quality
Sulut & Timor Project DRM Material
The major objectives of power plant water chemistry and water treatment are to
minimise deposition and corrosion of the boiler and to ensure that steam is of
the appropriate quality
pH value in the water systems must be monitored in order to avoid dissolution
of the iron protective layer and other undesirable reactions
Conductivity changes strongly as a function of temperature.
Dissolved oxygen (O2) supports the formation of the water/steam cycle
protective magnetite (or hematite) layer in pure water. Dissolved oxygen may
promote corrosion with water that contains even low concentrations of salts.
Phosphate (PO43-)works as alkalizing agent but also as scale inhibitor in boiler
water preventing deposits and scaling caused by hardness of the water (Ca
and Mg).
Iron (Fe) impurities appear mostly as fine particles in the water-steam
circulation. Iron concentration is supplying information on metal dissolution
processes in the system and the metal take-up by the water.

Limits of Silica (SiO2) for boiler water are set by the steam purity requirements
for turbine operation. Silica (SiO2) concentration comparison between feed
water and steam or feed water and boiler water can tell about problems in raw
water treatment or quality. Silica (or sodium) concentration comparison tells
also about functionality of drop separation in the drum

SHI recommends to follow VGB to manage feed water and boiler water quality
Comparing ABMA, VGB has more clear instruction and available data table to define
the requirement for pH, Conductivity, oxygen (O2), Phosphate (PO43-), Iron (Fe),
Silica (SiO2)
VGB is widely applied as feed water and boiler water quality management guideline
over world.
VGB defines water/steam values limit values by different action levels (normal
values and action levels 1-3).
