Terrestrial Ecosystems
Terrestrial ecosystems are exclusively land-based ecosystems. There are
different types of terrestrial ecosystems distributed around various geological
zones. They are as follows:
Forest Ecosystems
Grassland Ecosystems
Tundra Ecosystems
Desert Ecosystem
Forest Ecosystem
A forest ecosystem consists of several plants, animals and microorganisms
that live in coordination with the abiotic factors of the environment. Forests help
in maintaining the temperature of the earth and are the major carbon sink.
Grassland Ecosystem
In a grassland ecosystem, the vegetation is dominated by grasses and
herbs. Temperate grasslands, savanna grasslands are some of the examples of
grassland ecosystems.
5. Do people, animals, and plants live in the same or different habitat? Explain.
Human habitats are places where humans can live and find all they require
to exist. Although most human habitats are similar to animal environments, such
as woods and grasslands, humans and animals live in quite different types of
shelters. Animals, too, require these items.
Animals tend to live in distinct places in the wild. Plants of many types
thrive naturally in various environments. Plants and animals will pick where they
reside based on the availability of water, food, and climate. A habitat is the
environment in which a plant or animal lives.

Answer the following:
1. Enumerate human intervention that can disrupt balance of an ecosystem.
Human activities on land and in the sea can have a significant impact on
ecosystems. Many issues confront ecosystems, including climate change, ocean
acidification, permafrost melting, habitat loss, eutrophication, stormwater runoff, air
pollution, pollutants, and invasive species.
There are five major ways that business activity can threaten ecosystems:
climate change, pollution, habitat destruction, overexploitation, and introduction
of invasive species. Climate change from human activity has already had an
impact on the climate and is projected to cause significant harm to the earth
system over the next century if not mitigated. Habitat destruction,
overexploitation, and introduction of invasive species all negatively impact local
ecosystems and should be considered in sustainable business activities.
Post-CompetencyAssessment
1. What is energy of pyramid?
An energy pyramid is a diagram that depicts the movement of energy in an
ecosystem from one trophic, or feeding, level to the next. The model is a graph
that compares how much energy organisms use at different trophic levels.
2. Discuss what will happen to the living things if the environment can no longer
provide our needs?

If you have the chance, buying fresh organic food is a great way to
support local farmers, reduce your carbon footprint and support nature with
your food choices.

around you, encourage your family and friends to take part in outdoor
activities. Encouraging others to see the value and beauty of nature and its
wildlife may be the most important way to help save it.
