FINAL EXAMINATION in Analytical Chemistry

Name: ________________________________ Yr & Sec: _______________ Date: ________________

Directions: Solve the following problems using your knowledge about Chemical Equilibrium, Acids and
Bases, Writing Balance Net Ionic Equations, Balancing Redox Equations. Show your computations to
each problem and STRICTLY no erasures.
A.
1. Consider the following system at equilibrium:
4HCl(g) + O 2(g) 2 H2O(g) + 2 Cl2(g) + 114.4 kJ
a) Is the reaction endothermic or exothermic?

b) If is added, in which direction will the reaction shift in order to reestablish equilibrium?
After the new equilibrium has been established, will the final molar concentrations of
HCl, and increase or decrease?

c) If heat is added, in which direction will the equilibrium shift?

2. For the reaction

2 NO N 2O4
a) At a given temperature, 1 mole of NO2 is placed in a 10 L container. After equilibrium is
established, there are 0.20 mole of N2O4 present. Calculate Keq at this temperature.

b) At a given temperature, 3.2 moles of N2O4 is placed in a 4.0 L container. After

equilibrium is established, there is 0.15 mole of NO 2 present.

3. At a temperature of 927 °C, the equilibrium concentrations for the reaction

CO + 3H2 CH4 + H2O
are [CO] = 0.3065 M, [H2] = 1.46 M, [CH4] = 0.1935 M and [H2o] = 0.1935 M. Calculate the
value of the equilibrium constant for this reaction at this temperature.
4. Phosphogene, COCl2 is formed from the reaction of carbon monoxide and chlorine gas.
CO + Cl 2 COCl 2
At 600 °C, the equilibrium constant for the reaction is 4.57 x 10 9. At a certain instant, the
concentration of CO is 2.15 x 10-3 M, Cl2 is 1.22 x 10-5 M. In what direction is the reaction going to
proceed?
