A short and direct suction Line helps improve pump perfor~ fmance and reduces the possibilities of valve Cavitation. Whenever possible, adequate space Should. be provided around the pump to perait Gach inspection and adjustment. Particular attention should be given to the space required for removal and installation of the gear reducer, eccentric, packing, ete. The drive must be accurately aligned. Punp sust be’ properly leveled and securely fastened to 3 foundation or base, The punp should have @ posi tive suction head of 10 feet (04.8 em. For operating conditions in vhich a net positive Suction head available is less than 10 feet, please consult Cooper Petroleun Equipment, Quiney, ILinois, Engineering Department. — Maxi= mua allowable temperature of the fluid being pumped $e 200° F (93° C+ SUCTION PIPING ~ Suction pipe (or hose if used) should be the full size of suction opening. If, for any reason, the suction Line is of greater length than usual, the next Larger size should be used. Suction’ Line should slope up tovards the punp at a uniform grade so that air pockets are “eliminated, Suction Line must be air tight, as any air leaking into the Line will reduce the volumetric efficiency of pump. If it is necessary to have bends in the suction Line, they should have long radius sweeps. ALL piping ust be supported independently of pump to Snaure that no strain is imposed in the pump by nisalignnent or improperly fitted pipe. A Suction Cine strainer 1s recommended on all applications. This strainer should have an area OF 1-1/2 to 2 tines the area of the suction Line. WARNING The suction Line strainer must be serviced at regular intervals. Clogged or partially clogged strainer can cause severe pump cavitation and poor expendable part Life. PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE - The pump must be pro- tected from excessive discharge pressure by 2 pressure relief valve. This valve must be installed as near punp discharge as possible. { DANGER a? Never instatt a stutott valve inthe ine between the pressure relief valve and the pump cylinder. DANGER Improper use or maintenance of pre sure relief valves can cause excessive pressure whieh may result in property Gamage and/or serious personal injury or death. Pressure relief valve should be set to operate approximately 1-1/4 tines the discharge pressure and MUST NOT exceed adjoining system equipment tolerances. linen pump 1s equipped with 9 demco® pressure Felief vatve, use only ONE shear pin specified by the Denes pressure relief valve instruc~ tons. De not use atlen wrenches for shear pins, hanmer on the shear bar stem or shear bar Slot, For complete installation and maintenance instructions refer to Denco® Catalog R81. LUBRICATION - POWER END = The eccentric, cross~ heads and main shaft bearings are lubricated by Oil. in the crankcase. Pump uses an extreme pressure gear oil. Recommended oils are shown below and on data plate. Temperature ep Gear oi BaF to 60°F osgrevssses SAE BD Type GL=5 28,9" € to 15.80) 20° F to 100° F 6.7" € to 37.8) 50" F to 160° F Gore to 711° SKE 90 Type GL~S s+ SAE 140 Type 6L-5 WARNING ‘A minimum oil viscosity of 200 ssU ust be maintained during pump operation. Essential additives for all types of oils are rusty, foam and oxidation inhibitors. The Erankease oil capacity is 30 gallons (115.5 Uiters). Oi must be added 9s required to aeintain the level to middle of the oil Level ‘gouge Located on the back of the pum frame. nor In order to insure a sufficient off supply for pump, oil level should be checked while pump is running. Punp lubrication is provided by a force-feed system, The oil pump is rotary type, driven off the main gear which deLivers filtered oil to ‘the connecting rod Liners and crosshead pin bushings. The oil pump is reversible and will operate in either direction, 31-810 Page 4 Tt 1s recommended that an independently driven iL pump, driven at a constant speed, be used on aUl units. When pump ofl pressure falls below 25 PSIG (1.725 bar), an “auxiliary independently driven oil pump, “operating at a constant speed, WusT BE used, WARNING A minimum oil pressure of 25 PSIG (1.725 bar) and ofl viscosity of 200 SSU must be maintained at all tines. The pump can be driven in either direction. The preferred direction of rotation of the input Shaft is indicated by an arrow located on the frase. The indicated direction is recommended because crosshead load will be carried on the botton guide, resulting in a more quiet opera tion and better lubrication. WARNING in the direction indicated on the frame. OIL FILTER - A replaceable element oil filter 4s located inside the crankcase. Filter element should be replaced each tine the erankease oil is changed or every 1000 hours. Oil filter and all other oil pump system compo- nents are protected from excessive internal pressure by a pressure relief valve betveen it land the off pusp. Pressure relief valve setting is 110 Pst (7.586 bard. Tine between ofl changes depends upon Local or ‘operating conditions. Ordinarily, if the crank case is kept closed, it should not be necessary to change ofl nore often than once in 1000 working hours. The ofl pressure gauge and oil level gauge must be checked frequently and if the pressure is less than 25 PSIG (1.125 bar), the ofl level mst be checked. Oil should be changed if it is found to be dirty or if it contains any contamination or water. The screen on ,the ofl suction pipe might be stopped up so that pum cannot get sufficient Oil to maintain pressure. This screen should be examined hen the oil is changed and cleaned thoroughly. HEAT EXCHANGER (Standard Equipment) - A bronze shell and tube heat exchanger is provided to keep crankcase ofl temperature at 160° F (71° c) by using an automatic water control valve. This valve has a heat sensing probe in the crankcase ‘ofl uhich controls water to the heat exchanger to maintain ofl temperature within Linits. WARNING Pumps are shipped from the MITHOUT oft in the crankease. factory w AXWARNING ALL pumps must be driven ONLY in the direction indicated on the frame. 3-1-610 STARTING A NEW PUNP - The hood should be re- moved, and the pouer end examined and cleaned if necessary. Pump may have been in storage or in the yard. for some tine and asa consequence, Girt ‘or rust from condensation may have formed in the crankease. Drain all water accumulation fron the bottom of crankcase. Check all nuts and screws, tighten if necessary. FILL the crankcase with oil of proper grade to proper level. auantity shown on data plate indicates approxinate oil requirements, j CAUTION Priming is important! It lubricates plungers or pistons and Liners. To prevent excessive wear on fluid pistons, Plungers and packing when starting, remove the Gischarge valve cover plates and discharge valves and prime pump. Pump should be started Slowly and operated for several hours with Little or no discharge pressure. check the oil level as it say be necessary to add a snail anount of ofl to compensate for that adhering to walls of the crankcase and soving parte. Punp may then gradually be brought up to full speed and full working pressure. Watch for Undue ‘heating or abnormal noise in working parts. Check all joints in the suction Line to be sure there are no air or fluid Leaks. Check for abnormal vibration caused by improper suey tion conditions. Be sure stuffing box packings are properly lubricated, Before starting a pump which has been idle for a long period of tine, drain any water accumulation fron crankcase by” removing the Grain plug and replacing it when clean oil begins “to flow from drain. Add ofl to the proper Level. It is recommended that the fluid end of pump be primed to prevent excessive wear on the Blungers or pistons and liners when starting. OPERATION - Pump should always be started slovly, with Little discharge pressures this gives ‘the oil a chance to warm up and flow Through alt ofl Lines and bearings. This warm up is especially operation. important during cold weather DANGER The frame cradle safety cover, guards, crankcase hood and all inspection plates rust be secured in position before the punp is started and not renoved while in operation. WARNING Punp sust NEVER be operated at speeds, pressures or horsepower exceeding the values shown on the nameplate. Never operate well Service pumps below 34 RPM (main shaft) without approval from Cooper Petroleum Equipment’ Marketing Department, Quincy, Illinois. FLUID CYLINDERS - The fluid cylinders provided are three-piece steel block type. Material is heat treated, forged alloy steel. The fluid end is provided with removable bolted-on suction and discharge manifolds. Page 5
