MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMME IN ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC


ENGINEERING, AFE BABALOLA UNIVERSITY

1.1. Introduction
The field of electrical engineering could be divided into two broad categories: light current
electrical engineering and heavy current electrical engineering. The light current electrical
engineering includes electronics, radio, communications, instrumentation, measurements,
control, and materials science and devices technology. The category of heavy current
electrical engineering covers electrical power systems, high voltage technology, and
electromechanical energy conversion including machines and power electronics. All these
special branches are widely utilized in electrical engineering industries, corporations and
other government establishments. The postgraduate studies programmes in the Department
are aimed at the training of high-level manpower in the specialized areas of electrical
engineering for national development. The courses are designed to train the students in the
latest developments and modern technologies in the solution of electronic and electrical
engineering problems facing the nation.

1.2. Philosophy
The philosophy of the programme is to produce highly skilled manpower with requisite
understanding of the practice and research in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Such
graduates at the end will be able to generate technologies for the nation’s development,
agriculture advancement etc. in the quest of improving the quality of lives and the training of
manpower.

1.3. Objectives
The main objectives of the postgraduate programme in the Department of Electronic and
Electrical Engineering are as follows:
i. To provide students with the bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in electronic and electrical
engineering or related fields, with deeper and specialized knowledge in several aspects of
electronic and electrical engineering, placing special emphasis on the present and future
needs of the Nation in industrial growth and technological development.
ii. To provide for professionals in the field the opportunity for upgrading their qualifications,
and also an opportunity for an eventual reorientation of their specialization by making
available to them up-to-date professionally oriented postgraduate courses.
1.4. Admission Requirements
Candidate must have five Credit passes including English, Mathematics, Physic, and
Chemistry O’Level. Candidate must also possess one of the following:
i. A candidate with a first degree in a relevant Engineering discipline from a recognized
University with minimum of a second class lower division may be admitted provided the
University matriculation requirement is satisfied.
ii. A candidate with an upper credit pass in the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), in a relevant
Engineering discipline, from a recognized University may also be admitted to a Masters
Degree Programme provided the University matriculation requirements are satisfied.

Programme of Studies and Areas of Specialization

Candidate can specialize in any of the areas listed below.

(iii) Power Systems

Requirements for Graduation


To qualify for the award of Masters of Engineering, a candidate must obtain a minimum of
31 Units comprising 24 Units of Coursework, 1 unit of Seminar and 6 Units of Research.

1.5. Duration Of Programmes

 MASTER of Science degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering


(a) Full-Time:- a Minimum of 4 (four) semesters and a maximum of 6 (six)
semesters
(b) Part-Time:- a minimum of 6 (six) semesters and a maximum of 8
(eight) semesters

1.6. Examinations
Course Work
(a) The minimum pass mark shall be 50%.Continuous assessment shall constitute 30% of
the examination for each course.
(b) Any student who fails in any course shall repeat the course
(c) Any student whose CGPA falls below 2.50 in any semester shall withdraw from the
programmes.

The scoring and grading of courses shall be as follows:

1.7. Thesis Or Dissertation


A panel of examiners shall be composed to orally assess a thesis or dissertation according to
individual University regulations, but the examination shall at least be guided by the
following:
The minimum composition of the examination panel shall comprise:
i. External Examiner;
ii. Head of Department;
i. Supervisor;
ii. Co-supervisor (if any); or at least one other member of the
Department (if no co-supervisor); and
iii. One member appointed by the Postgraduate School.

EEE 801 Advanced Engineering Mathematics (3 Units)


Revision of linear algebra, ordinary differential equation, and laplace, fourier, and z-
transforms. Complex variable, analysis, and applications. Fast computational methods for
linear algebra and integral transform algorithms. Short time fourier transform and
applications, Wavelet transform. Green's function, Bessel functions, gamma function.
Euler transform. Metric spaces, and algebraic structure. Linear spaces: Bannch and
Hilbert spaces; operators in Hilbert spaces. Singular value decomposition vs eigenvalue

EEE 805 Measurement and Instrumentation (3 Units)


Review of types and classification of instruments. Elements of an Instrument. Theory and
application of transducers and sensors: sensors that measure mechanical properties, smart
and wireless sensors, micro- and nano-sensors, ultrasonic sensors. Signal conditioning.
Telemetry, transmission and connectivity in measurements. Instrument-computer
interfacing. Real-time digital computer application in data acquisition and analysis.
Microcontrollers and Embedded instrumentation. Diagnostic testing and trouble shooting.
Introduction to industrial instrumentation. Selected Measuring Instruments: (from the
following): Pipeline flow meters. Measurement of the partial pressures of gases in the
blood. Virtual and computer based instrumentation. Frequency dependent transducers.
Non-destructive testing; digital tachometers; EM pulse tachometer; PH Measurements.
Digital linear transducers. Rotameter. etc.
EEE 806 Communication Systems (3 Units)
Fundamentals of analog and digital communication systems. Modulation, demodulation/
detection, and synchronization. Communication over bandlimited channels, equalization,
multiple antenna systems, space-time codes. Multiple access techniques: TDMA, FDMA,
spread spectrum, CDMA, OFDM.

EEE 807 Advanced Digital Signal Processing ( 3 Units)


Review of fundamentals of DSP: Discrete-time signals and systems, sampling and
reconstruction, Z-transform, transform analysis of linear time-invariant systems,
structures for discrete -time systems, Fourier analysis of signals using DFT, FFT. Digital
filters: Digital and analog filtering, Filter specifications, Magnitude and phase responses,
IIR and FIR filters, Design of IIR and FIR filters; Rational parametric models of random
signals, Autoregressive models, Yule-Walker equations, Levinson-Durbin algorithm,
Lattice filters, Schur algorithm. Adaptive FIR filters, Error-performance surface,
Steepest-descent algorithm, LMS algorithm, Convergence properties, Gradient adaptive
lattice filter, Method of least squares, Recursive least squares algorithm, Applications in
telecommunications, image processing, video compression, audio system, etc. DSP
Hardware: Fixed point and floating point DSP, merits, demerits, and applications.

EEE 808 Antennas Theory (3 Units)


Theory and application of electromagnetic radiation and radiating structures. Emphasis in
antenna designs for modern wireless communications and radar systems. Apertures,
reflectors and lens, finite and infinite arrays, broadband antennas, Fresnel Fraunhofer
regions, and Huygens’principle. Concepts for synthetic aperture radar and radar cross
section.

EEE 809 Electromagnetics (3 Units)


Review of Maxwell’s equations. Boundary conditions. General plane wave solution of
Maxwell’s equations, potential functions, radiation, 2-D solution to Laplace’s equation,
and fundamental electromagnetic theory.

EEE 810 Microwave Communications (3 Units)


Microwave Devices: Overview of performance characteristics and applications.
Microwave Diodes. Microwave bipolar transistors, hetero junction bipolar transistors,
Field Effect Transistors. Transferred Electron Devices. Avalanche Transit-Time Devices.
Microwave tubes. Applications in microwave circuits. Network Analysis: Transmission
Line Equations and Solutions, Smith Chart, ABCD Matrix, S-Parameter Matrix, Signal
Flow Graphs. Impedance Transformation and Matching Impedance Measurements,

EEE 811 Computational Intelligence Techniques (3 Units)


Fuzzy logic control: Linguistic variables, fuzzy sets and operators, knowledge rules,
system analysis, design and implementation, applications of fuzzy logic in control
system. Neural Network: Introduction to mathematical analysis of neural network and
learning rules, applications of neural network to control systems. Genetic algorithm and
applications to control system. Introduction to robotic kinematic.

EEE 812 Wireless Communications (3 Units)


Wireless LAN. Modem technologies, xDSL, cable modem. IP over different networks
and internetworking. Internet Applications Model: Applications models: Remote login
(TELNET, Rlogin), File transfer and access (FTP, TFTP, NFS), Electronic Mail (SMTP,
POP, IMAP, MIME), World wide web (HTTP), Voice and Video over IP (RTP), Internet
management (SNMP). Streaming technologies. W AP (Wireless Application Protocol).
Internet Security and Electronic Commerce Technology: Internet security and firewall
design (IP sec). Encryption standards. Electronic cash and transaction models. Internet
business models and technology development.

EEE 814 Power Electronics (3 Units)


Power semiconductor devices: diodes, triacs, silicon controlled rectifier (SCR),
characteristics operation and protection. Principle of rectification: controlled rectification
single phase and multiphase; firing circuits for SCRs; Pulse generating circuits, mark
space control, pulse train firing techniques. Principles of inversion: AC-AC inversion,
DC-AC inversion, natural and forced commutation, Pulse width modulation and variable
speed drive schemes. Principle of HVDC transmission; complete DC Link, voltage and
current control, factors affecting design and operation. Special applications:
uninterruptible power supply schemes, static switches employing SCRs.

EEE 815 Modern Control Theory (3 Units)


Brief history and comparison of classical control with modern control. Revision of linear
algebra in control theory: Matrix operations, types of matrix, elementary operations, rank,
determinant, inverse, transpose. Eigenvalues-distinct, repeated, complex and their
eigenvectors, diagonalisation of matrix. Computation and applications of eigenvalues and
eigenvectors. State space description of dynamic systems, linear system response,
transfer function matrix. Analysis of linear system, stability, observability, and
controllability. Smith McMillan form. Optimal Control: Linear regulator problem, linear
quadratic methods, state regulation, state estimation, Ricatti equations. Dynamic
programming, Calculus of variation, Pontragin principle. Kalman Filter & Extended
Kalman Filter: State space model, state estimation, applications. Digital control system:

EEE 816 Computational Methods in Control (3 UNITS)

EEE 818 Advanced Digital Electronics (3 Units)


Review of Digital arithmetic circuits and operations. Review of Combinational and
sequential systems and Application of Counters and registers. Integrated circuit logic
families. MSI logic circuits and applications (decoders, encoders, multiplexers,
demultiplexers etc.). Data busing. Interfacing with the analogue world (ADC/DAC).
Memory devices. CPLDs and FPGAs. Digital circuit description using Verilog and
VHDL. Programmable Logic arrays, devices and controllers. Microprocessor and
Microcomputer. Microcontrollers and Embedded systems. CAD systems and chip design.

EEE 819 Electric Drives and Control (3 Units)


Review of Electric Motors. Dynamics of electric drives. DC motor drives. Induction
motor drives: starting, braking and transient analysis, calculation of energy losses, speed
control, stator voltage control, variable frequency control from voltage and current
sources, slip power recovery-Static Scherbius and Cramer drives. Synchronous motor
drives: starting, pull in and braking of synchronous motors, speed control – variable
frequency control, cycloconverters control; brushless DC Motor, linear induction motor,
stepper motor and switched reduction motor drives - important features and applications.
Energy conservation in electrical drives: losses in electrical drive system, measures for
energy conservation in electric drives, use of efficient motor, energy efficient operation
of drives, improvement of power factor and quality of supply.

EEE 820 Power System Planning And Reliability (3 Units)


Objectives of planning, short and long term planning. Load forecasting. Basic probability
theory: Review of probability concepts, Probability distribution functions; Probability
distribution in reliability evaluation. Reliability concepts: exponential distributions;
meantime to failure; series and parallel system; MARKOV process; recursive technique.
Generation system reliability evaluation: Concept of Loss of Load Probability (LOLP),
Evaluation of indices for isolated system, Generation system reliability analysis using the
frequency and duration methods. Transmission System Reliability Evaluation: Evaluation
of LOLP and indices for an isolated transmission system using frequency and duration
method. Distribution system reliability evaluation: reliability analysis of radial system
with perfect and imperfect switching.

EEE 821 Renewable Energy System (3 Units)

Review of power and torque equations of A.C machines; electromechanical energy
conversion principles. Analysis of magnetic and electric circuits of machines: distributed
windings; MMF and flux, self-inductances, transformer and rotational voltages.
Inductance coefficients of rotating machines. Introduction to the generalized machine
theory: Voltage, power and torque expressions of primitive commutator machines. Two
phase to two axis transformation. Three phase to two phase orthogonal transformation.
Generalised D.C machines: Special Machines; the universal commutator machine,
primitive and actual machines, current, impedance and voltages and connection matrix.
The theory of A.C. fed two-phase machines, linear induction motors. Variable reluctance
motors, stepper.

EEE 823 High Voltage Engineering (3 units)


Properties of dielectrics, Ionization processes and gas breakdown of Solid and Liquid
Dielectrics, Electrostatic fields, Surge phenomena, Insulation Coordination, Insulation in
Polluted atmospheres. Corona and interference from power Systems, Techniques of H.V.
tests and specifications, H.V. dc Conversion and transmission

EEE 824 Robotics (3 Units)


Introduction: history and uses. Robot hardware (actuators, drives, joint mechanisms, etc.
(electric, pneumatic and hydraulic). Robot Statics: kinematics using normal trigonometric
relations, Rotation and translation matrices, computing forward kinematics using the
Denavit-Hartenberg parameters, inverse kinematics. Robot dynamics: Jacobian, velocity,
forces, kinematic singularity, motion rate control, kinetic energy. Robot mobility and
manipulation: proximity sensing and obstacle avoidance, object location, geolocation,
computer vision, trajectory planning, self-navigation, robot control. Human-Robot
Interaction
