THE ACCEPTABILITY OF LANZONES AS AN ADDITIVE IN MAKING BODY

LOTION

Jaimie Rose U. Caldito, 9 SSC – Thomson

Background of the Study

Lanzones or langsat (Lansium domesticum) is an edible tropical fruit native to the

Southeastern parts of Asia. Its high content of antioxidants, vitamins, and protein, alongside other
minerals, gives it a host of health benefits and medicinal uses (Bajaro, 2019). Studies have stated
that the components found in lanzones include polyphenols, niacin, riboflavin, and vitamin A; all
of which are extremely beneficial to the skin. However, despite the numerous benefits it poses to
the skin, people have yet to try adding the fruit to skin products.

This research paper reports the findings of a thorough study to indicate whether lanzones
qualifies a good additive to body lotion. Emphasis is placed on the lotion’s moisturization and
other attributes it may offer for the betterment of the skin. Also central to the research study is
whether it affects the product’s quality or not.

Experiments are conducted to be able to predict phenomena. Typically, an experiment is

constructed to be able to explain causation. Experimental research is important to society - it
helps us to improve our everyday lives (Blakstad, 2008). I believe that through my study, people
will be provided with much more insight to how this exotic fruit is useful to our growing society,
especially in enhancing the integrity and wellness of a person. This is a mere step to encourage
more people to experiment and try different things. The urge to explore and seek novelty helps
us remain vigilant and gain knowledge about our constantly changing environment.

Lanzones is a good starter when generating a new additive to skin products, given its
numerous advantages you can gain upon consuming and applying to the skin. Thus, I can
hypothesize that lanzones can, improve a lotion’s quality and purpose. My research has
incorporated my observations regarding the produced lotion with added lanzones peelings. (3rd

Review of Related Literature

Why is natural moisturization important? With moisturization, you can reduce your
chances of any skin problems arising. As the largest and essential organ that keeps the body safe
from infection, it is fitting for this part of the body to be taken care of well. This need for
sufficient skin hydration requires an additive for certain skin products that can supply the skin
with enough nutrients. One of the fruits that fit this description is lanzones. (cite this.)

According to Winter (1972, p. 212), the oil extracted from the lanzones is used as an
emollient or moisturizer in cosmetic products. Relevant studies have also claimed that this
South-East Asian fruit exhibit anti-aging and lightening effects to the skin. The dried
Hydroethanol extract of Lansium domesticum fruit can be used as cosmetic. The dry extract is
re-dissolved in propylene glycol to obtain the final product. It is used as a skin care product for
skin depigmentation and moisturizing (Tilaar et al., 2008). Practical Health and Wellness
Solutions (2019) also suggests that the fruit promotes healthy skin since lanzones holds a content
of Vitamin E. Despite these numerous studies stating that lanzones is indeed a notable ingredient
used in various skin products, it is unspecified which parts are used. So far, this is the only
deficient factor in the related studies, and this is yet to be addressed.

Moisturization is the body’s way of hydrating itself. Aside from the water we take
through the mouth, the body also relies on our skin. And for this reason, the body alone cannot
rely on chemicals. With lanzones added into a body lotion, it can be theorized that it may solve
this setback. Several parts of the plant are used in popular medicine, but it is more important as
an economic crop as the edible fruit is widely eaten fresh as dessert. However, it can also be used
in cosmetics as we found that its extract has antioxidant property as well as moisturizing and
lightening effects with a good safety profile (Tilaar et al., 2008).
