SITE APPROACH FOR DUCTILE DETAILING AS PER

IS 13920 :2016 – (BEAMS)

PRESENTER-
MR. SOLMON SHARMA
FOUNDER
BEAS
DUCTILITY

 It is an ability of a material to undergo deformation without fracture.

NOTE:
Importance: Gives us enough time for rehabilitation of the material by
showing yielding in different forms.
DUCTILE DESIGN AND DUCTILE DETAILING is to be considered while
performing any analysis of structure.
Previously IS 456:2000 use to do the designing and IS 13920:1993 was
used for detailing.
IS 13920:2016 gives us provision for both DESINING AND DETAILING.
IMPORTANCE OF IS 13920:2016

 To provide adequate stiffness, strength and ductility without

collapse to the structure when subjected to severe shaking of earth
during earthquake.
 This standard is used to design:
1. RC moment resisting frames
2. RC moment resisting frames with unreinforced masonry infill walls.
3. RC moment resisting frames with RC structural walls.
4. RC structural walls.
UNDERSTANDING THE TERM

 STIFFNESS: ( Associated with elastic deformation)

After unloading- back to its position
load

Deformation

 STRENGTH: It is a measure of stress that can be applied to a material

before it permanently deforms.
 DUCTILITY: It is an ability of a material to undergo deformation
without fracture.
RC MOMENT RESISTING FRAMES WITH UNREINFORCED
 RC MOMENT RESISTING FRAME:
MASONRY INFILL WALLS.
 RC MOMENT RESISTING FRAMES WITH RC STRUCTURAL WALLS.
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS:

 Min Grade of concrete – M20 BUT M25 is to be considered if height is

above 15m
 M20 (1:1.5:3) M25 (1:1:2)
 Steel reinforcement to be used-
 415 (conforming to IS 1786 –HSD Bars and Wired for Concrete
Reinforcement).
 Fe500 or Fe550.
 Note: Fe500D, SD is available in market.
BEAMS:

 Factored axial compressive stress shall not exceed 0.08 Fck.

 If it exceeds 0.08 Fck then it has to be designed as per clause 7. ( we
will see later).
B
 General Design Requirement for beam:
1. Beam to have width to depth ratio more than 0.3m
D

B/D>0.3

2. Width should not be less than 0.2m

3. Beam should not have depth more than 1/4th of clear span (except for deep
beam and beams for elevated RCC water tanks)

4. Width of beam shall not exceed width of supporting member.

NOTE**: These general specifications are given considering the reinforcement

arrangement ( min reinforcement required in beam).
LONGITUDNAL REINFORCEMENT:

• Atleast 2 nos of 12mm dia bars in top and bottom face.

• Minimum longitudinal steel ratio on any face =
• Maximum longitudinal steel ratio at any face at any section is 0.025.
• The minimum steel at the face of the column at bottom face of the beam should
be atleast 50% of the steel present at the top face of beam. ( Eg.: To be
considered when we provided curtail reinforcement in beam).
Ast

50% Ast
 At any section of beam Ast should not be less than Ast/4 ( When we have
different Ast at both the supports, then we need to consider Maximum Ast).

Ast< Ast/4
 Anchorage Length has to be beyond the interior face of the column.

x=Ld+10D - Anchorage for 90* bend -----------Anchorage

for 90* bend can be taken as 8 x D
Ld= development Length ( 41x D)

90* Bend
SHEAR REINFORCEMENT
 Only Vertical Links is to be provided. There should be no inclined links.
 Minimum Dia of Link is 8mm.
 Following are not calculated for design shear force:
a) Bent up bars b) Inclined Links c) Concrete
 From the column face upto 2d distance, close spacing should be provided.

2d 2d
 Close spacing : (S1)
a) D/4
b) 8 x (Smallest Longitudinal bar)
c) 100mm
s1 s2 s1
 First spacing :
d
50mm max.
 Spacing (S2)
2d 2d
>d/2
50mm maximum
6d hoop length is to be provided.
 SPLICES ON LONGITUDNAL REINFORCEMENT:
 Spacing of stirrups > 150mm
 Lap ( in tension zone) < Ld.
 Ld should be calculated considering larger dia bar.
 Lap splice shall not be provided in: S> 150mm

a) Joint b) 2d from the face of column c) quarter length of beam from

center

Xxxxx xxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxx Xxxxx

2d xxxxxxxxxx 2d

50mm maximum
 Incase if maximum splices is to be provided we should go for welding or by using
mechanical couplers.

 NOTE** Welding should be in the least consideration.
