Neochim S.A. was founded in 1995 with the specific purpose of
refining crude glycerine from biodiesel production and other natural
sources to produce the highest quality of kosher grade natural
refined glycerine. Neochim’s production unit is located in Belgium at
Feluy, about 35 kilometers south of Brussels, on the site of BASF.
Neochim is supported by SPIGA NORD’s expertise in processing
crude glycerine and also SPIGA’s marketing experience in Europe
and the rest of the world. After several years of production Neochim
decided, thanks also to the help and support of BASF, to build the
biodiesel plant based on an existing plant completely modified using
the best of modern technologies. The plant takes full advantage of
the available synergies with BASF, especially for steam, and the
presence of the glycerine refining unit on the same site. Biodiesel
plant capacity is 300,000 t/y which, with little modification, can be
increased to 400,000 t/y. SPIGA NORD S.p.A., the mother
company of Neochim, was established in 1957 in Genoa,
specializing in the production of natural refined glycerine. Spiga
Nord has since devoted all its efforts to continual technology
improvements, developing high precision equipment for laboratory
tests to study its product in all aspects related to consumer
requirements. The success of these efforts encouraged SPIGA to
create Neochim in Belgium and to build one of the most
technologically advanced plants for the refining of natural crude
glycerine. SPIGA and Neochim’s total annual capacity amounts to
about 28,000 metric tons of refined natural glycerine; SPIGA’s
activity extends also to the manufacture of glycerine derivatives.

Ecofys
Carlo Hamelinck has ten years of all-round biofuels expertise.
He joined Ecofys in 2004 after a PhD on advanced biofuels and
associated international logistics. Within Ecofys he advised on
the potential contribution of biofuels in Ireland, Belgium,
Romania and Turin Province, and on incentivising policies. He
assisted in the development of guarantee-of-origin certification
for biofuels and the BiofuelGo initiative. He wrote a book about
the European market for biofuels, performed due diligences
and benchmarks on biofuels initiatives for industries and private
equity investors and is involved in greenfield developments in
Africa to demonstrate the great potential of sustainable
biofuels.

Alexandra Langenheld has been National Expert “Renewable
energies and energy efficiency” to the European Commission,
Directorate-General Energy and Transport, Unit “Regulatory
policy & Promotion of renewable energies” mainly focused on
biofuels since 2006. Previously, Ms. Langenheld worked in the
“Climate Protection, Renewable Energies” Department at the
Federal Environment Ministry for two years focusing mainly on
renewable energies, esp. bioenergy in the context of European
and international cooperation. From 2002-2003 she was an
Academic at the Technical University Berlin, Faculty
Architecture, Environment, Society mainly focused on applied
research and acquisition of research projects in the field of
renewable energies and transport.

William Thurmond is the President and Founder of Emerging
Markets Online, a global energy and biofuels intelligence firm
started in 1997. Mr Thurmond is also the author of Biodiesel
2020: A Global Market Survey. Mr. Thurmond’s work has been
cited in the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, Biodiesel
Magazine, Swiss Derivatives Review, the Futurist, BBC Radio,
Fox News, Reuters TV, and his business has received Forbes
Magazine’s “Best of The Web” award seven years in a row. Mr.
Thurmond is also a columnist for Biofuels International journal
and Renewable Energy World.
A member of The International Association for Energy
Economics and the Association of Professional Futurists, and
serving the American Biofuels Council as Chairman of
Development and the National Algae Association as Chairman,
Research and Development, Mr. Thurmond also serves as a
Lecturer at the University of Houston. He has participated in
graduate courses towards a PhD, Alternative Futures, at The
University of Hawaii at Manoa; earned an M.S., Studies of The
Future, from The University of Houston; and a B.A.,
International Relations and Economics from Rollins College.

Pekka Pesonen, Secretary General,
COPA-COGECA
Pekka Pesonen has been Secretary General, COPA and
COGECA, since 2007. He began his career in 1991 at Finnish
dairy company Valio Ltd. where, over the following six years, he
held various roles including Key Account Manager, Sales
Manager and Space Management Expert. From 1997-2005 he
worked as a dairy and livestock advisor in Brussels employed
by Finnish dairy, meat and egg co-operatives Pellervo
Federation of Finnish Co-operatives and Finnish farmers’
unions MTK and SLC. Subsequently, Mr. Pesonen held the
position of State Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and
Forestry in Finland before joining COPA and COGECA.
Mr. Pesonen graduated with an M.Sc.Agric. from Helsinki
University, faculty of agriculture and forestry, in 1991 majoring
in agricultural market economy with additional studies in
agricultural policy and extention education. This followed
previous studies at Helsinki University and University of
Minnesota as well as special training at Pellervo Market
Research Institute and agricultural training in North Dakota.
Born in Juva, Finland, in 1963 Mr. Pesonen speaks excellent
Swedish and English as well as good German and French.

After graduating high school, Jan ’t Hart started in 1965 is
working career in banking at the Algemene Bank Nederland
NV. in Rotterdam. From 1967 till 1969 he worked for a short
period of time at the Nederlandsche Overzee Bank N.V. At this
bank he was closely involved in international banking for
commissionaires like Schouten, Nidera and Granaria (later on
Glencore) which are still active in the market today. From 1969
till 1972 Jan ‘t Hart stepped out of the banking world and
started working for two trading-companies active in
shipbuilding and industries. In 1972 he returned to the banking
world and started working for the Rabobank. From 1986 till
1994 he was CEO of the local Rabobank office. In his
Rabobank time he followed several finance and economics
studies.
In 1994 he started his own counselpractice which was active in
supporting small and middle businesses at financing, buying-
selling companies, co-management and start-ups. From this
perspective Biovalue contacted him for involvement in the
projectdevelopmentfase. Since 2004 Jan ‘t Hart is member of
the board as CFO on behalf of 65% shareholder DELTA NV.

Paulo Carmona, Executive Director, Prio SA
Paulo Carmona joined the Board of Prio, a Martifer Group
company, in 2006. Since then he has been the Executive
Director for their international biofuels business. Prio is a fully
integrated company, from oilseed farming in Romania, Brazil
and Mozambique, crushing and biodiesel production in
Romania and Portugal and fuel distribution in Portugal.
He holds a 5 years degree in Business Administration and
worked in companies including UBS, Merril Lynch and REFCO
with focus on international and agro commodities business.
Before joining Prio he was a board member with Nutasa
Group, a Portuguese trading and animal feed company. Mr.
Carmona has also been the Director of Executive Digest, a
leading economics and management magazine in Portugal and
an MBA teacher for the Portuguese Banking Institute.

holding company with shares in renewable energy,

Mr. Vila studied Organisation and Process Engineering at UPC-

capacity of 515 000 mts of biodiesel from its two plants - one
located in Monopoli, Southern Italy, and the other in San Pietro
Di Morubio, North-Eastern Italy. In 2006 Ital Bi Oil was one of
the major EU exporters of biodiesel, with 100,000 mts of

development is starting oil exploration and production.
As Director of the Department of Alternative Sources of Energy
Robert Gmyrek is responsible for implementing biofuels strategy
due to requirements of the Polish and European biofuel law.
In addition, he is a Vice-President of the Polish Technological
Platform of Biofuels and Bio-Components and a Member of the
Scientific Council of Institute for Fuels and Renewable Energy.
His previous functions include a Secretary of State in the

Mr. Soragna is currently Biodiesel Product Manager at Desmet
Ballestra Oleo where he has worked in a number of different
positions since joining the firm in 1990. For the first three years,
Mr. Soragna worked as a Process Engineer for oleochemical and
edible oil plants and then Technical Manager from 1993 to 2001.
In 2001 Mr. Soragna became Technical and Production Manager
until 2005 when he took up his current role as Biodiesel Product
Manager during which time he has been responsible for the
execution of over 85 biodiesel plants.
Mr. Soragna began his career with MONTEDISON as Production
and Process Engineer and subsequently moved to
ESSETIPROJECT where he worked as Process and Project
Engineer. Mr. Soragna graduated in Chemical Engineering from
Rome University in 1984.

graduated in Chemical Engineering from Rome University.

After completing his Masters degree in Business Science at the
Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Eelco started his career in the
chemical industry at DSM and after that worked as Global
Marketing Manager at Ciba Specialty Chemicals in Basel,
Switzerland for 5 years, where he and his team have consistently
grown the halogen free flame retardants business.

Axel Ingendoh is Biodiesel Expert in Lanxess’ Specialty
Chemicals Group. His activities include research & development
of antioxidants, especially for biodiesel, and the latest product
developments Baynox and Baynox plus. He is also responsible
for global technical marketing and product development of
Baynox antioxidants for biodiesel and vegetable oils as fuel.
Dr. Ingendoh studied pharmacy and chemistry at the University of
Marburg where he received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry. He then
held a postdoctoral position at Geneva University working on
natural product synthesis. From 1982 to 1986 he was Chemical
Researcher at Bayer Wuppertal & then moved to Plant Manager,

Per Munk Nielsen, Senior Science Manager,

Per Munk Nielsen has a masters degree in chemical
engineering from The Danish Technical University. He has
been with Novozymes for 20 years in different positions. Most
of the time has been in R&D where he has worked on the
development of enzyme applications. He is Senior Science
Manager in the R&D Department, Food and Specialties, where
some of the Oils & Fats related projects are organized. Since
2001 he has been mostly working with projects in oils & fats
applications. Presently, one of the major projects is the
deveopment of enzymatic catalyzed processes for biodiesel
production. During his career at Novozymes he has filed 60
patent applications.

How to Register
Registrations must be received in writing or electronically at our secure web site. Please complete and mail or fax a copy of registration
form with a cheque or credit card number. Fee includes program materials, continental breakfast, networking luncheon and
refreshments.
Payment
Payment must be received within five business days of returning the signed contract. After receiving payment a VAT receipt will be
issued. If you do not receive a letter outlining details two weeks prior to the event, please contact the Conference Co-ordinator at ACI
Europe Ltd.

Cancellations
Substitutions are welcome up to 24 hours prior to the event. Cancellations must be received in writing no less than 3 weeks prior to the
start of the conference; a full credit voucher towards a future ACI conference will be issued. Any cancellation received less than 3
weeks prior to the start of the event shall be deemed to be a breach of this contract by client, and accordingly, no credits will be given.
By completing this registration form, the client hereby agrees that in case of dispute or cancellation ACI Europe Ltd will not be able to
mitigate its losses for any less than 50% of the total contract value. Cancellations must be received in writing by mail or fax three weeks
before the conference. Thereafter the full conference fee is payable. If for any reason ACI Europe Ltd decides to amend, cancel or
postpone this conference, the conference fee will not be refunded. Furthermore, ACI Europe Ltd will not be responsible for covering
airfare, hotel or other costs incurred by registrants. In the event that ACI Europe Ltd cancel or postpone the event, ACI Europe Ltd
reserves the right to transfer this booking to another conference to be held in the following twelve months, or to provide a credit of an
equivalent amount to another conference within the following twelve months. The construction, validity and performance of this
agreement shall be governed in all respects by the laws of England to the exclusive jurisdiction of whose courts the Parties hereby
agree to submit.
