1.10 cylindrical pillars of building have to be painted. The diameter of each pillar is 70 cm and the height
is 4 m. What is the cost of painting at the rate of Rs. 5 per square metre?

a. Rs. 400
b. Rs. 440
c. Rs. 480
d. Rs. 500

Answer (b)

r = 35 cm = 35/100 m = 7/20 m
h=4m
Curved surface area of 1 pillar = 2πrh
Curved surface area of 10 pillars = 10 x 2πrh = 20πrh

22 x 7 x 4
Total cost = Rs. 5 x 20πrh = Rs. 100 x = Rs 440
7 x 20

2.The figure shows a section of a metal pipe. Given the internal radius of the
pipe is 2 cm, the external radius is 2.4 cm and the length of the pipe is 10 cm.
Find the total surface area of the pipe

Solution:

r = 2, R = 2.4, h = 10

Total surface area of pipe

= area of internal surface + area of external surface + area of the two rings
= 2πrh + 2πRh + 2(πR2– πr2)
= (2π × 2 × 10) + (2π × 2.4 × 10) + (2 × (2.4 2π – 22π))
= 40π + 48π + 3.52π
= 91.52π
= 91.52 × 3.142
= 287.56 cm2

3.A hollow cylindrical iron pipe of length 1.4 m has bore radius 2.5 cm and thickness of the
metal is 1 cm. What is the volume of the iron used in the pipe?

a.2640 cm3
b.2604 cm3
c.2460 cm3
d.None of the above
Answer (a)
Length of the pipe = 140 cm
Internal radius = 2.5 cm
External radius = 3.5 cm
Volume of the pipe
= π (3.5 x 3.5 - 2.5 x 2.5) x 140 cm3
= 2640 cm 3

 4.A cylindrical vessel of base radius 14 cm is filled with water to some height. If a
rectangular solid of dimensions 22 cm x 7 cm x 5 cm is immersed in it, what is the rise
in water level?

a. 0.5 cm
b. 1.0 cm
c. 1.25 cm
d. 1.5 cm

Answer (c)
Volume of the rise of water in the cylindrical vessel = volume of the rectangular solid
immersed
If h is the rise in water level
π142h = (22 x 7 x 5) cm3
⇒ h = 22 x 7 x 5/π.14 x 14 cm
⇒ h = 770/196π = (770 x 7)/196 x 22 = 1.25 cm

5. A lead pencil is in the shape of a cylinder. The pencil is 21 cm long with radius 0.4
cm and its lead is of radius 0.1 cm. What is the volume of wood in the pencil?

a. 9 cm 3
b. 9.4 cm 3
c. 9.9 cm 3
d. 10.1 cm 3

Answer (c)
Volume of the wood
= volume of the pencil – volume of the lead
= [π(0.4)221 – π(0.1)2 x 21] cm3
= π x 21 (0.16 – 0.01) cm3
= 66 x 0.15 cm 3 = 9.9 cm 3

6. From a cylindrical log whose height is equal to its diameter, the greatest possible
sphere has been taken out. What is the fraction of the original log which is cut away?

a. 1/2
b. 1/3
c. 1/4
d. 2/3

Answer (d)

Volume of the cylindrical log

= πr2h where h = 2r
= πr22r = 2πr3
The radius of the greatest possible sphere = r
Therefore, the volume of this sphere = (4πr3)/3
⇒ this volume is (4πr 3)/3 ÷ 2πr 3 = 2/3 of the volume of the cylindrical log
 7.A cylindrical can of internal diameter 24 cm contains water. A solid sphere of radius 6
cm is completely immersed in water in the cylinder. The water level increases by

a. 0.25 cm
b. 0.5 cm
c. 2 cm
d. 3 cm

Answer (c)

Volume of water increased = Volume of the solid sphere

= (4π63)/3 = 288 π cm3
If the increase in water level is h cm, then
π122h = 288π
⇒ h = 2 cm.

8.The inner and outer radii of a 7 m long hollow iron right circular cylindrical pipe are 2 cm and
4 cm respectively. If 1000 cm3 of iron weighs 5 kg, what is the weight of the pipe?

a.264 kg
b.132 kg
c.396 kg
d.None of the above
Answer (b)
Volume of the iron rod = External volume – Internal volume
= 700 x π(42 - 22) cm3
= (700 x 22 x 12 cm3)/7
= 26400 cm 3
= 26.4 x 5 kg = 132 kg

9.Half of a large cylindrical tank open at the top is filled with water and identical heavy spherical
balls are to be dropped into the tank without spilling water out. If the radius and the height of
the tank are equal and each is four times the radius of a ball, what is the maximum number of
balls that can be dropped?
a.12
b.24
c.36
d.48
Answer (b)
If the radius of the tank is R and the radius of spherical balls is r, then R = 4r
Also, the volume of all the spherical balls = half the volume of the tank i.e (πR2h)/2
or (πR3)/2 (since R = h)
or [π(4r)3]/2 (since R = 4r)
or 32πr3
Volume of spherical ball = (4πr3)/3
If the number of balls that can be dropped is n then
n x (4πr3)/3 = 32πr3

n= 3 x 32 x π x r3 = 24
4 x π x r3

10.A solid cylinder of height 9 m has its curved surface area equal to one-third of the
total surface area. What is the radius of the base?

a. 9m
b. 18 m
c. 27 m
d. 30 m

Answer (b)

Curved surface of the solid cylinder = 2πrh

Total surface area = 2πr2 + 2πrh
⇒ 2πrh = (2πr2 + 2πrh)/3
⇒ 6πrh = 2πr2 + 2πrh
⇒ 4πrh = 2πr2 or r = 2h
⇒ r = 2 x 9 m = 18 m.
11.The curved surface of cylinder is 1000 cm2. A wire of diameter 5 mm is wound
around it, so as to cover it completely. What is the length of the wire used?

a. 22 m
b. 20 m
c. 18 m
d. None of the above

Answer (b)

Let the no of turns the wire makes on the cylinder be n

∴ the height of the cylinder = diameter of the wire x n = 5 x n mm or 0.005 m ....(1)
Let the length of wire needed be L m
But the wire makes n turns over the cylinder, so it can also be expressed as
L = 2πr x n
⇒ L/n = 2πr....(2)
Curved surface area of the cylinder = 2πrh
2πrh = 1000 cm2 = 0.1 m2
0.005n x L/n = 0.1 .... substituting from (1) and (2) above
⇒ L = 0.1/0.005 = 100/5 = 20 m
