Oral tradition says there was an area of Los Teques that was known as
“La Vuelta del Paraíso” (in the 20th century), where the Báez family lived.
Miguel Estrada, Josefina Báez's nephew, tells us that his aunt was one
of those in charge of preparing the food at home. On one occasion she
was making “pastelitos de queso ”and she had a few strips of wheat
flour left over, so it occurred to her to wrap the white cheese with the
strips and fry them. Her sisters, friends, and other people were
delighted with this culinary invention, becoming interested in the
recipe, which became famous and popular.
Among the people of Los Teques at that time lived Mrs. Casado, who
dispatched snacks for the festivities. She began to make them and send
them to the state of Aragua and Caracas through the railroad. When she
arrived to deliver the orders, people began to say "The Tequeños

Pedro, held every June 29 in Guarenas and
Guatire, with devotees dressed in costumes

Blessed palms come down from El Ávila
Los Palmeros de Chacao, a tradition dating from
the late seventeenth century, evokes the biblical
passage of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. Its origin
dates back to the eve of Holy Week in 1776,
when an epidemic engulfed the capital of the
country's province, claiming the lives of many
people from the Chacao area. The parish priest
of the San José`s Church, Father José Antonio
Mohedano, prayed tirelessly for the plague to
go away. At the church, the parish priest asked
his parishioners to send their laborers up the
mountain (El Ávila, Waraira Repano National
Park) and bring the royal palms for Holy Sunday.
Many climbed the hill between prayers for the
disease to end. They distributed the leaves in
the houses of the affected families. That day
came and all the sick were healed. Currently, Los
Palmeros go up every Friday before holy Sunday
and go down the following Saturday with the
palm leaves that will be blessed. Once blessed,
they are distributed among the believers, who
braid them and transform them into crosses that
they keep in their homes as a symbol of faith
and divine protection. In 2019, UNESCO
declared to Los Palmeros of Chacao, Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
