EDITORIAL
Venezuela is a Land of Grace that God created.
Perhaps that is why in its geography we find a
grandiloquent synthesis of all the possible
habitats and ecosystems that exist in the world
and here, in this Caribbean country, manifest a
special color.
The Miranda state is a faithful example of natural
and cultural mega-diversity, a region where its
coasts invite us to explore an oasis of sun and
beach, like those that Chirimena, Caracolito, or
Puerto Frances gives us. Meanwhile with
eagerness and energy we get excited to dance
and sing songs of faith with the Dancing Devils of
Yare, the Parranda de San Pedro in Guatire and
Guarenas or the unique Fiesta de San Juan in Curiepe.
An entity which surprises us with its attractive
contrasts, those that allow us to paraglide in El
Jarillo, venture to go skydiving in Higuerote, taste
an excellent gastronomic experience in Baruta
and the famous and international Barloventeño
cocoa or simply accompany Los Palmeros de
Chacao to have a Holy Sunday, the traditional
blessed palm to make that very Venezuelan cross
as a symbol of protection.
Miranda is definitely a destination that has it all, a
place to please all tastes, from contemplating the
magic of a virgin habitat like the Tacarigua
Lagoon, being enraptured by the nostalgic
atmosphere of a building like Hacienda La
Trinidad or admiring the technique of blowing
glass to turn them into works of art in San Antonio
de Los Altos.
Let's continue taking care of ourselves, with all the
biosecurity regulations that guarantee us to enjoy
a healthy tourist journey, like the one we
encourage you to know in this new issue of Viajes
Venetur, with hope, optimism, and a lot of love,
sure that together we will advance in the
consolidation of the Great, free and sovereign
Homeland that Simón Bolívar and Francisco de
Miranda dreamed of.

In the Bolívar parish of the Zamora municipality,

Miranda state, every first Sunday after July 16,
“Virgen del Carmen Day”, Araira becomes the
floral capital of Venezuela in tribute to its saint.

An occasion in which the people make ornate

carpets, in a handmade way, with flowers such
as daisies, roses, carnations, chrysanthemums,
sunflowers, magnolias, calla, lilies, among other
species, producing true works of art that
decorate the town giving it an atmosphere of
peace, faith, hope, and festivity. Araira, Miranda state

The tradition began in 1992, when the parish

priest of Araira, prebyster Humberto Delgado,
told the board of the Society of Ladies "Nuestra
Señora del Carmen" in his country of birth,
Peru, flower carpets were made to honor the
Blessed Sacrament. This religious manifestation
has received various recognitions, among them
the following stand out: the designation as
cultural heritage of the Miranda state in 2006 by
the regional Legislative Council; and
religious-cultural heritage in 2015 by the Mayor
of Zamora.

The activities begin early, at dawn, with the

making of the rugs. After the church services,
held at noon, the Virgin is taken out to start a
procession on the streets of the town, walking
the image through the tapestries created as

Venezuelan cocoa is positioned as the best in
the world, recognized by the International
Cocoa Organization (Icco). This fruit has
enhanced national and international
gastronomy for years, thanks to its quality,
diversity, genetics, and extraordinary natural
qualities that cause an extremely pleasant
taste on the palate, even its characteristic
aroma makes the experience become an
incomparable memory.
In our country, cocoa has had multiple
recognitions for its fantastic flavor; it is grown
in bushes 2 to 3 meters high that must be in
shade for production to be completed
successfully. Among the states with the most

outstanding cocoa plantations in this Land of
Grace is Miranda, which has more than 25
thousand hectares, concentrating the
highest surface density of cultivation in the
Barlovento municipalities Acevedo, Pedro
Gual and Buroz, which produce
approximately 8,750. 000 kg of cocoa per
year, with an average yield of 350 kg per
hectare.

It has approximately 104 kilometers of coastline, where

the visitor can enjoy 42 beautiful beaches.

Until the arrival of the Spanish conquerors, its territory

was occupied by various communities of the Caribbean
ethnic group, such as the Caracas, Teques,
Cumanagotos, Mariches, and Quiriquires, peoples who
courageously defended their lands.

With the largest number of 5-star hotels in Venezuela.

A wide gastronomic corridor.

Tuna, kingfish, lisa, lebranche, snook, crab, shrimp, squid,

chipichipi, guacuco, oyster, and octopus are extracted on
its coasts.

Cocoa, sugar cane, corn, coffee, yams, oranges, casabe,

bananas, ñame and mandarins are grown on their lands.

The Alfredo Jahn Cave, located in Barlovento, is a natural

monument covered with spectacular stalagmites and
columns.

In Curiepe, Barlovento, there is “El Monumento al

Tambor”, a large-scale artistic work, conceived by a deep
love for Afro-Venezuelan culture, made by the sculptor
Dagoberto Ramos in 1997.

“Having a passion for what is done is one of
the qualities that guarantee us success in the
things we undertake and if we add
professionalism and enthusiasm to this, good
results will not wait.” The lawyer Lorena Lin
Chávez, President of the Miranda state
Tourism Corporation (Corpomitur), is a faithful
example of this premise, leading tourism with
an efficient team in this entity that, like
Venezuela, has it all.
What has been the biggest challenge that
managing this corporation has involved?
“One of the most important challenges has
been to achieve an adequate tourist
promotion of the Miranda state, make the
visitor falling in love again. For this we have
designed and implemented an attractive
program of activities in the hands of the
private sector, which invites the population to
come, telling them: here we are again, with a
lot of gastronomy, a lot of hospitality, a lot of
tradition, with destinations for everyone and,
the most important thing, with all the
guarantees of biosecurity and trust that the
tourist requires ”, the official highlighted.

To tackle this challenge, Corpomitur carried
out a scientific study of tourist behavior,
identifying visitor needs and expectations.
“This investigation determined, for example,
that the sun and beach tourist was turning his
gaze towards the coasts of La Guaira state,
due to the fact that it was coming from
mismanagement that generated insecurity for
visitors. By virtue of which, the backbone of
the management of the current governor,
Héctor Rodríguez, has been the issue of
security. Currently, we can say that we are one
of the safest entities in the country, which is a
fundamental variable for this sector ”, said the
young professional.
For every taste
The quality and diversity of destinations that
this entity has is impressive, not in vain the
president of Corpomitur affirms that "in
Miranda we have everything and we present it
with joy, cordiality and love."
Referring to this point, Lin Chávez explains:
“… here we have business tourism in the
metropolitan area, where the largest number

of shopping centers and five-star hotels in the
country are located, in the municipalities of
Baruta, Chacao and El Hatillo, in addition to
the largest high-level gastronomic corridor,
certified by the National Chamber of
Restaurants. We also have 104 kilometers of
beautiful coastline where people can enjoy the
sun and the beach. Higuerote, Puerto Francés,
Banquito, Río Chico, Chirimena, among other
places, are formidable for this type of activity.
If you are looking for ecotourism, in Páez
municipality, we have a beach where you can
see the nesting of turtles under the
responsible supervision of Inparques. In the
same way, the Laguna de Tacarigua National
Park is ideal for bird watching, since there are
more than 230 species between seasonal and
migratory, which is very rich for specialized
tourism, with the support of service providers
that before and/or after the tour you will be
presented with delicious options of local
cuisine. Scientific tourism can be done in
Birongo, visiting the Alfredo Jahn Cave
Natural Monument, known by the natives as
Cueva Tapa del Cambural, with impressive
biodiversity, a harmonious transit that allows a

Together everything is possible
If Lorena Lin is clear about something, it is that
the success of tourism management involves
the concert of all the actors who make life in
this sector to jointly undertake actions that
bear collective fruit.
How have you integrated the communities
into the tourism promotion programs in the
region?
“We have done it through programs such as
the one called Miranda come to my beach,
which involves the Plan for the beautification
of coastal facades, which began in the Brión
municipality, linking service providers,
chambers of commerce, volunteers from the
political and government structures, as well as
Youth Solidarity Brigades, Ministry of Tourism
and Corposervices, in order to attend to

requests for cleaning, weeding, and
sanitation. This plan has been extended to the
Páez municipality and continues to advance to
others with a strategic deployment schedule.
At the same time, the beach organization plan
that began last year is being developed. We
had many beaches where there was no
structure that allowed this vital dialogue
between the national and regional
government and the service providers. Today
90% of the beaches are constituted by
organizational formulas that allow achieving
conditions of vindication for this union. Another
program is the Social Tourism that aims, during
the year 2021, to serve around 52,000 inhabitants
in vulnerable conditions, as well as the elderly
and people with disabilities. Students are also
incorporated into these plans, rewarding those
who have had the best school averages in the
state, with a trip to different destinations", says
the public servant.

History, culture, and tradition
Valuing the cultural heritage of the Mirandino
is an axiom present in the management of
Corpomitur, especially when it has two
folkloric manifestations that have been
declared by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage
of Humanity: The Dancing Devils of Yare
(Simón Bolívar municipality) and La Parranda
of San Pedro (Zamora municipality, Guatire),
indisputable icons of the identity of this
hospitable town, together with other
traditions “… such as La Parranda de San Juan
(Curiepe) and Los Palmeros de Chacao,
endorse their faith, which every man and
women of this lavish land demonstrate
working for their well-being and happiness so,
with pride and love, those who visit us will say
with courage: I want and I will return to

This entity is one of the 23 states that make up Venezuelan

geography, it stands out for being the ideal tourist
destination for all kinds of tastes. With its variety, climate,
and natural spaces, it is able to satisfy the adventurous
needs of the most demanding visitors. It enjoys a privileged
location in the central region of the country, close to
international airports, with very good roads and accessibility
for tourism in the metropolitan area and its surroundings.

The origin of his name

It is a tribute to General Francisco de Miranda, the most

universal Venezuelan, a faithful follower of the
independence ideal, known as the Precursor of American
Emancipation against the Spanish Empire.

Come to the heights

Los Altos Mirandinos encompass the Carrizal, Los Salias and

Guaicaipuro municipalities. It is in this region where the
capital of this state, Los Teques, is located, and it is
recognized for being the most populated area of the place.
Its name refers to its mountainous condition, where you will
find fantastic tourist destinations such as El Jarillo, which is
next to the Colonia Tovar in the state of Aragua, both of
German origin. It is one of the most famous areas since it
allows paragliding flights with specialized pilots.

Burning land and drums

When we talk about the exuberant tourist content that

Miranda has, we cannot fail to mention the well-known
“burning land and the drum”: Barlovento, which, as the lyrics
of the song say, is the “fulías land… which they (women) wear
their tight waist to a party…” This popular song, by Eduardo
Serrano, has become one of the most representative of
Venezuelan folklore, which highlights the cultural sense that
this space of Venezuela keeps. An attraction in this area is the
Laguna de Tacarigua National Park, which functions as a refuge
for migratory birds, as well as housing various sea turtles that
inhabit the place.

One of the best known and most admired places in Barlovento

is Higuerote because, in addition to its beautiful beaches, it
keeps a great cultural treasure, for which it is a faithful people
in celebrating its patron saint festivities and has a great musical
tradition with rhythms such as the Afro-Caribbean, especially
the drums.

Sun and beach

Puerto Francés is located a few kilometers from Higuerote and is

listed as one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. With its
different shades of green, it will delight tourists, so without
hesitation, they will want to immerse themselves in these waters. It
is a destination that must be visited.

For those who like to sail, we recommend taking a boat to Playa Caracolito
or Playa El Indio to enjoy their beautiful and crystalline waters.

Who prefer to arrive by private car with their family, Los Totumos is
an excellent option, it is a beach with little waves and depth, with a
load capacity for 2,500 people.

And for people of young spirit, who like to play sports and adventure,
Playa Cangrejera is the best alternative. But, if what you want is to ride
a jet ski, boat or yacht, then you have to go to Playa Buche.

Carenero, it is said that its name comes from “careening”, which

means “repairing the hull of a ship”. It is located about 7 kilometers
north of the town of Higuerote and, according to history, it was a
colony of artisanal fishermen and one of the most important places
in the commercialization of cocoa.

Chirimena, renowned for its beautiful beach, as well as its drums, is

located just 30 minutes from Higuerote. With a radiant sun that
captivates, it is a permanent invitation to bathe and enjoy its waters,
a must in this entity.

The Venezuelan Association of Five Star Hotels
of Venezuela (Avecintel), is an organization that
since its creation, on February 27, 1992, has
been committed to the development,
promotion, and strengthening of the country´s
tourism and hotel sector, hand in hand with 86
associates´who work hard to provide the best
services for their guests and clients. In relation
to the work carried out by this important
institution, we spoke with her Executive
Director María Angelina Velásquez, an
experienced professional in the administrative,
managerial and commercial areas.
In favor of its members
As Velásquez points out, Avecintel´s action is
based on three essential premises “… the
protection and defense of the general,
professional and human institutional interests
of its associates, the stimulation of their
development and skills, guaranteeing a service
with high criteria of quality and the
consolidation of close and productive
relationships with public and private entities, as
well as with the associations of the national
tourism sector ”.

The management philosophy of this
prestigious organization is framed in hard work,
tenacity, perseverance, in making the best
service its standard. “We are aligned with the
policies issued by the governing organizations,
including the Ministry of Popular Power for
Tourism and any other entity of the national
government that establishes the guidelines of
the sector”; explains its Executive Director.
Challenges
Depending on the changes that the
environment demands, especially due to
Covid-19, Avecintel and its members have had
to face this new reality.
“Throughout 2020 and so far in 2021, our
members have heroically adapted to this
situation, developing biosecurity programs that
have been implemented in all of our hotels. We
have undergone a general transformation,
especially with new technologies applied to
areas of the hotel industry, telecommuting, big
data, to better know our clients to provide the
best services”, tells us the Graduate in
International Studies and Master in Economics,
María Angelina Velásquez.

What projects does Avecintel face for 2021?
“In favor of our hotels and national tourism,
Avecintel has planned for this year to continue
with significant projects. Among them are
training, statistical studies, improvements in
protocol areas, the implementation of
biosafety programs, the Association´s
magazine, Hospitality & Tourism, - promoting
tourism to all the states of the country where
the hotels are located. affiliates-, the creation
of a job bank, in order to attract talent to work
with our affiliates ”, indicates the interviewed.
Betting on human talent
Aware of the need for qualified personnel to
guarantee quality service, Avecintel has a
training program developed together with the
National Institute for Socialist Training and
Education (INCES), called “INCES Young
Apprentices”. It is aimed at training human
talent in the area of hospitality, hotel
maintenance mechanics, bar and restaurant
service, kitchen, and hotel accounting, among
others.

“We have completed 14 years with this
program and our objective has been to train
young apprentices in the best way. We do it in
partnership with our affiliated hotels. We have
the satisfaction of having people who have
been trained with us, and, today are chefs and
human resources managers, among other
positions. It is a way of betting on the future of
Venezuela.
The program is adapted to each hotel, so that
they can count on qualified relief personnel,
trained in their facilities, ”says Velásquez.
Definitely, Avencintel is an association that is
committed to the development and well-being
of this Land of Grace in one of the strategic
areas for its development; tourism, working
with ethics, commitment, and quality attributes
that enhance our country as an attractive, safe,
and peaceful destination.

Millennial culture
Mexico keeps in its territory one of the wonders
of the world, the majestic Chichén Itzá ruin, a
valuable archaeological testimony of the
Mayan civilization. Located in the state of
Yucatán, it contains a pyramid (Kukulcán
temple) created by the ancestors to worship
their history. Another of the monuments within
the enclosure is the sacred cenote, an open-air
geological depression.

An exceptional place dedicated to ancient

civilization is the archaeological zone of
Teotihuacán, in the state of Mexico, known as
the "place where the gods were made", one of
the most important centers of the ancient world
that have endured with an inestimable variety
of monuments, gardens and representative
murals of this prodigious land. It is a feast to

Much more than beaches

In this country, it is tradition to think of

Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Veracruz, Mazatlán,
and other places that fall in love. But, other
destinations remain in the hearts of tourists. In
the north, there is the Sonora desert, a long set
of sand that offers several places of interest
such as Las Misiones, a colonial-style route and
archaeological zones, El Pinacate Biosphere

History
of the tequeños

Oral tradition says there was an area of Los Teques that was known as
“La Vuelta del Paraíso” (in the 20th century), where the Báez family lived.
Miguel Estrada, Josefina Báez's nephew, tells us that his aunt was one
of those in charge of preparing the food at home. On one occasion she
was making “pastelitos de queso ”and she had a few strips of wheat
flour left over, so it occurred to her to wrap the white cheese with the
strips and fry them. Her sisters, friends, and other people were
delighted with this culinary invention, becoming interested in the
recipe, which became famous and popular.

Among the people of Los Teques at that time lived Mrs. Casado, who
dispatched snacks for the festivities. She began to make them and send
them to the state of Aragua and Caracas through the railroad. When she
arrived to deliver the orders, people began to say "The Tequeños
arrived!", and there is the name of this delicious Venezuelan appetizer
arose that cannot be missing in every good party and that is part of our
gastronomic identity.

How to make
chocolate tequeños

Directions:
In a deep bowl, add flour, salt, milk, egg,
butter, and sugar. Mix until creating a
homogeneous dough (without lumps) and let
it rest for half an hour. On a table, add flour so
that it is dusted, there it will be kneaded and
Ingredients: stretched with a roller. Once the dough is
400 gr of all-purpose wheat flour completely stretched, it is cut into strips, with
5 chocolate bars which the pieces of the chocolate bars will be

Faith dresses in red

One of the most emblematic Venezuelan traditions is Los Diablos
Danzantes de Yare, a festival since the seventeenth century is held on

Dancing for the miracle
Another Mirandino pride is La Parranda de San
Pedro, held every June 29 in Guarenas and
Guatire, with devotees dressed in costumes
representative of the image of San Pedro

and respect for the saint, strolling the streets

outskirts of the Nuestra Señora de Altagracia

 Blessed palms come down from El Ávila
Los Palmeros de Chacao, a tradition dating from
the late seventeenth century, evokes the biblical
passage of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. Its origin
dates back to the eve of Holy Week in 1776,
when an epidemic engulfed the capital of the
country's province, claiming the lives of many
people from the Chacao area. The parish priest
of the San José`s Church, Father José Antonio
Mohedano, prayed tirelessly for the plague to
go away. At the church, the parish priest asked
his parishioners to send their laborers up the
mountain (El Ávila, Waraira Repano National
Park) and bring the royal palms for Holy Sunday.
Many climbed the hill between prayers for the
disease to end. They distributed the leaves in
the houses of the affected families. That day
came and all the sick were healed. Currently, Los
Palmeros go up every Friday before holy Sunday
and go down the following Saturday with the
palm leaves that will be blessed. Once blessed,
they are distributed among the believers, who
braid them and transform them into crosses that
they keep in their homes as a symbol of faith
and divine protection. In 2019, UNESCO
declared to Los Palmeros of Chacao, Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
