Pen and Veggies
by Marlita Madera
Once upon a time, there was once a little boy who liked to draw than play outdoors. He
was a child addicted to draw comic strips than play video games, a child who would rather
read a good comic book rather than watch TV or a kid’s movie.

During recess time in school, he would hide under his teacher’s table. When his
classmates were gone to the canteen, he would look around the room and would find some
rolled or crumpled white papers on the floor. He would get them and star to draw sketches.
Then, he would grab his teacher’s coloring pencils to shade his drawings.

This happened in Jyro’s comfort zone –under his teacher’s table. His teachers, who
was curious, asked him one time why he loved to do it under her table. But Jyro would just
give her a smile and run back to his chair.

It was unique, and it was long ago. Now, Jyro is a grade six pupil. He has changed
almost in all aspects of his being, but one thing has remained—his addiction to comics.

Jyro has gone so far. When he reaches home from school, he will take a little rest and
start to do some sketches about how his day went on. He sketches both bad and happy
moments more artistically than before. After that, he will come visit his vegetable garden that
he made by himself with the guidance of his parents.

Gardening! Yes, Jyro has added another addiction to his list. He is so in love with
gardening now. Whenever he has no classes, his first words in the morning will be “How are
my cabbage today?” Or “I can’t wait to see the bulbs I planted a few weeks ago beginning to
pop their heads.” He is so enthralled by his planting and caring for his growing vegetable
garden every day. Jyro loves the excitement and anticipation of waiting for the seeds to
sprout. He even takes photos of his plants at their different stages for him, it’s the best way to
learn how plants grow and what they need to survive; for better than reading about it in books.

Even when he is still at school, he always looks forward for dismissal to check on his
garden. His family is so happy to have a productive childlike Jyro.

How about his first love? Yes, he still sketches comic strips, but he is no longer under
his teacher’s table. Can you guess where he does his sketches now?
Remember
Productivity and quality are the state of being productive. Being productive means
working hard and getting good results. A child who practices productivity and quality
excellently completes the tasks being given to him.
