In this project, we will investigate the two-dimensional motion of a projectile.
When we talk about a 'projectile,' we mean that we give an object an initial velocity
and then it moves only under the influence of gravity, similar to how a ping pong ball
is thrown. The study of projectile motion requires an understanding of basic kinematic
concepts such as acceleration motion, uniform motion, and equation of motion.
A projectile is defined as any object that is thrown with some initial velocity
and then allowed to move solely through the action of gravity, without being
propelled by any engine or fuel. A projectile motion occurs when an object is
launched into the air and then accelerated by gravity. The projectile is the object to be
projected, and the direction is the path the projectile will take. The principle of
conservation of energy states that in a closed system, the energy of interacting objects
remains constant. A projectile moves horizontally at a constant speed while
experiencing a constant downward acceleration of 9.8 m/s2 in the vertical direction.
Therefore, the acceleration of gravity is, -9.8 m/s2.
In our project experiment, the concept of projectile motion is applied more to
an object that is vertically upward and an object that is vertically upward with an
angle to the horizontal. The horizontal motion of the projectile is the result of the
tendency of object in motion to remain in motion at constant velocity.
A projectile remains in motion with a constant horizontal velocity due to the
absence of horizontal forces. It is not necessary to apply horizontal force to keep a
projectile moving horizontally. Gravity is the only force acting on a projectile. For
example, ping pong launcher that we create is one concept that related to projectile
motion.
This project allows us to apply the laws of physics and projectile motion
equations to our own ping pong launcher design. We were tasked with testing our
ping pong launcher to see if it could accurately launch a ping pong ball and reach the
desired range.
