MODULE 9

CHALLENGES OF A TOUR GUIDE

Activity:
Situational Analysis:

Below are three (3) challenges that a tour guide sometimes experiences. How would you
handle them if you were in the same situation? (5 points each).

1. You are scheduled to give a walking tour in Intramuros and it is raining due to the
typhoon in Metro Manila. The guests did not cancel the activity so it means that you
have to proceed rain or shine. How would you make the tour enjoyable to your guests
despite the situation?

• If it started raining, as a tour guide it is my responsibility to make them

comfortable and taken care of. I will ask them if its okay if our tour is going to be
hassle but enjoyable. Of course, it depends on how bad it is raining – and
whether or not there is lighting in the area. My guests’ safety is surely our first
priority. And you don’t want a bad review online from someone who felt
compelled to take a tour while it is raining bad or lightening. If we are doing a
walking tours, I will simply encourage my guests to bring an umbrella. If we are
dealing with light rain and umbrella is more than adequate to give my guests
comfort during the rain shower. And maybe I will bring them first to the museum
near Intramuros while waiting for the rain to stop.

2. The tour has almost ended and all of a sudden one of your guests announced that he
lost his branded shades. He tried to recall were he lost it and searched but to no avail.
He asked for your assistance. What should you do?

• If the item was lost inside the establishment or in the lodging area. As a tour
guide, I will Inform the lodging establishment’s security personnel. I will ask the
guest where did he last saw his lost item to determine the circumstances of the
crime. I will also ask the other guest to kindly look for the lost item on their own
belongings to make sure that no one is hiding the item. If we can’t find it, I will
assist my guest to the nearest police station to secure a police report. I will assist
my guest as possible as I can.

3. A group of tourists who were coming from San Pablo City booked you for a tour. The
time they gave was 10 am and all of a sudden, their coordinator called saying that they
are ready at 8am. You are not prepared for the change since you are far away from the
meeting place and you need at least two hours to reach the destination they requested.
What should you do?

• I will ask the coordinator to bring them at Sampaloc Lake so that they can relax
on the cold breeze of Sampaloc lake and ask the coordinator if they can assist
them to a near restaurant to have breakfast while waiting for me. In that way their
time will be consumed. I will ask the coordinator to let them roam around
Sampaloc lake and then be back to the meeting place at the exact time that was
given.
