A Septic Tank
A septic tank is designed to carry out the liquid waste of the usehold or
1 community including human feces. It has to be constructed based on
the instruction given in the Indian Standard Code IS 2470.

The septic tank was either constructed by the brick wall or RCC wall in
2 the rectangular or circular shape with a minimum of two chambers.

A septic tank should be constructed away from the exterior wall of the
3 building and should be placed open to the sky.

4 It should not be installed in the marshy area.

The septic tank was designed to retain the wastes at a minimum period
5 of 24 to 48 hours which is received from the households.

Choose a suitable location. It should be at least 3m from the nearest

6 building. Avoid areas where rainwater would stand or flow over the
tank or vehicles could drive over it.

Calculate the volume of the tank. The volume consists of two

7 components. Sludge storage and Liquid retention volume.

Calculate how much sewage will enter the tank in 24 hours (Daily
8 Flow). This depends on the context. If the water supply is known then
sewage can be taken as 90%.

9 Surface and subsoil water should not enter the tank.

The solid waste, paper, napkins should not be flushed into the septic
10 tank to avoidblockages.

11 The kitchen water should not enter the septic tank.

12 The sludge may be cleaned out every 1 or 2 years.

The minimum width of a septic tank is 600mm and the depth should be
13 1225mm including a freeboard of 300mm from the water level.

A partition wall raised at a distance of half-length of the tank and a

14 150mm x150mm hole is made at 450mm height in the wall to connect
both chambers.

The septic tank wall thickness should be a minimum of 230mm and the
15 floor concrete should be made in M15 grade of Concrete
.
The inner and outer walls should be plastered with a minimum of
16 15mm thicknessalong with the waterproof chemical.
17 The ventilation pipe must be raised 1800mm above the roof.
18 Provide enough sludge and scum storage space.
If the tank will be below the ground water level at any time the weight
19 of the empty tank should be greater than the weight of water
displaced, otherwise the tank may float.

The roof of the tank can be made of removable sections with lifting
handles (easy access) or a solid, reinforced concrete roof with round
20 access holes (min diameter 0.6m) (cannot fall into tank). These provide
access to the tank for desludging, checking levels and maintenance.

The top of the pipe shall be provided with a suitable cage of mosquito
proof mesh.
A minimum slope of 1: 10 shall be provided towards the sludge outlet
to facilitate desludging.
B Soakpit
A soak pit is constructed in the natural ground by the dry bricks with
1 open joints in a circularshape. The wastewater can easily soak on the
ground.
The soaking pit should be raised above ground level and the surface
2 water should not enter into the soak pit.
The soak pit shall not be less than 900mm in diameter& 1500mm in
3 depth below the invert level of the inlet pipe.
The absorption area of the soak pit could be 1 Sqm to 1.5 Sqm per
4 head of the user.
5 The soaking pit should be covered by the precast slab.
The top of the pipe should be laid about 5cm under the building paper/
6 Straw.
