Using the Pythagorean Theorem

SOL G.8
The student will solve problems, including practical problems,
involving right triangles. This will include applying:
▪ a) the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse
▪ b) properties of special right triangles; and
▪ c) trigonometric ratios

The Converse?

We can use the Pythagorean Theorem as a converse (work

backwards) to prove if a right triangle exists.

LOGIC REVIEW: Remember, the converse flips a statement. We

already know that we can use the Pythagorean Theorem in a right
triangle.
The Converse of this allows to say, “If the Pythagorean Theorem
works in a particular triangle, then it must be a right triangle.”
