PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use


Inhibits/blocks protein synthesis, because they chlamydia, mycoplasmal, rickettsial infections
inhibit the transfer of RNA from binding w/ (typhus); syphillis & gram-neg. infections in
messenger RNA. Because of this, amino acids cant clients w/ penicillin allergy; gram-pos. infections
add to the peptide chain ->bacteria cant replicate. (tetanus); cholera; anthrax; acne vulgaris

Complications Medication Administration


GI symptoms (N/V/D, abdominal pain); PO- on empty stomach 1 hr. before
teeth discoloration; or 2 hrs. after meals; give w/ non-
hepatoxicity; superinfenctions (C-diff, Candidas); diary food; do not give right before
bedtime; topical forms treats acne
photosensitivity, sunburn; suppression of long bone growth vulgaris; IM/IV can be given if oral
in premature infants forms can not be tolerated; shake
solution well before measuring;
another tetracycline can be given
more effectively w/food in renal
failure clients
Contraindications/Precautions
pregnancy-teratogenic; children younger 8 yrs;
allergy to tetracyclines; exposure to UV light;
renal/liver failure Nursing Interventions
give w/non-dairy foods; monitor
GI symptoms (decrease dose);
determine if client could be
pregnant; monitor liver function
test & liver damage; monitor for
Interactions superinfenctions, skin reactions,
lymphadenopathy & facial
absorption decreased by antidiarrheals containing kaolin, swelling
supplements, antacids containing calcium, magnesium,
aluminum;
dairy products & supplements w/iron, zinc decrease
absorption; tetracyclines decrease effectiveness of oral
contraceptives Client Education
take w/non-dairy foods; report if
pregnant, jaundice, abdominal
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness pain, difficulty chewing,
swallowing, vaginal discharge/
irritation, watery/bloody stools;
wear protective clothing,
sunscreen for sun exposure
