_______ 3. The introduction contains the main idea.
_______ 4. Each paragraph in the article should only have one main
idea.
_______ 5. New information can be added in the conclusion.

RECAP

We have learned that feature article is a creative article that deals with
real events, issues and trends. However, unlike news articles, it places more
emphasis on the people involved rather than on the facts of a news.

We also learned that a feature article has 4 parts, the title, introduction,
body and conclusion. In this self-learning module, we will dig in deeper on
how to write a feature article.

6
LESSON

Writing a feature article allows you to express your opinion using a fact-
based argument leading to a particular purpose. Today, we will be writing a
three-paragraph feature article with a topic about health.

Write an Eye-Catching Title

The first part of a feature article is the title. It tells what the article is
all about. That is why it is important for you to determine your PAT first.
Identify the purpose, the audience to whom your article is intended for, and
your topic.

Since the title is the first thing that your readers see, make it eye-
catching and fun. Also, try to keep it short, 2-8 words are enough. Remember
that all the first letters in a title should be capitalized except for the articles,
conjunctions and prepositions.

Present an Appealing Lead

The second part is the introduction. The introduction contains the
lead. The lead tells why the topic is interesting. Here are some of the ways on
how you can write your lead:

1. Lead with a Question – Give a question that is thought-provoking

to get the attention of the readers.
2. Lead with an Interesting Fact – This will teach the readers
something new and can spark an interest about the topic. You may
tell a general situation or trend. You may use the word recently to
talk about the latest trend.
3. Lead with a Famous Quote – A quote can get the readers think
about its relation to the topic.

Offer a Meaty Content

The third part is the body. It is the most important part of the feature
article. In here, you put all the critical and pertinent information of your topic.
To keep the body of your article organized, you have to only include one main
topic in each paragraph. Give supporting details and evidences to explain
your main idea. You may use words like first, besides, etc. to organize your
ideas.

7
End with a Bang!
The last part is the conclusion. It is the summary of the whole article.
You may give your stand or opinion and you can also make a prediction.
Just as how you gave a thought-provoking statement in the introduction,
make sure to also end and close your feature article with the intention to
transform your readers’ mind and actions.

Guided Practice
We will organize our feature article first by using the graphic organizer.

My topic is…
 The benefits of exercise.

My lead
 Question: Do you exercise regularly?
 Interesting Fact: Children do not exercise anymore
because of video games and other online entertainment
activities.

Who is this article about?

 This article is intended for children, especially to those
who don’t exercise.

What is this article about?

 This article is about the benefits of exercise especially for
children.

Why is it important for people to know about this?

 It is important because it will make people healthy,
especially children as they grow up.

What are the other details I want to include?

 Exercise boosts academic performance.
 Children who exercise develop healthy habits as they grow.

Now that I have determined my PAT, my whys and the details I want
to include in my feature article, I will now write the draft.

8
Draft

Introduction

Do you exercise regularly? Having plenty of exercise at your young age

is a brilliant idea. Recently, a lot of video games and other online
entertainment activities have been popping in the internet. This led to a
decline of physical activity among children, making it easy to get used to the
habit of not exercising.
Body
Exercise has many benefits. For instance, studies show that it boosts
academic performance. In addition to that, it has been proven that children
who exercise more develop healthy habits later in life.

Conclusion

In conclusion, exercise needs to be established as a routine for children

like you. This can be achieved if you include exercise in your daily activities.

As you can notice on my draft, I have deleted sentence number two from
paragraph one. I decided to put that statement instead in the conclusion.
After I have made my correction, I will now proceed to writing my final article.

Final Article
