Welcome to the English 5 Self-Learning Module on Identifying Different


Meanings of Unfamiliar Words (Denotation and Connotation) (Mathematics).

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

We have learned that denotation and connotation are two principal


methods of describing the meaning of words. Denotation is the precise, literal
definition of a word, the “dictionary” definition. Connotation refers to the wide
array of positive and negative associations that most words naturally carry
with them.

LESSON

There are some words or terms in Mathematics may have more than
one meaning. They may be denotative or connotative.

Today, let us talk about the Different Meanings of Unfamiliar Words


(Denotation and Connotation) (Mathematics).

Below are words used in Mathematics . Which of these words are not
familiar to you?

angle odd positive ratio


area mean sum volume
even point vertex fraction

When you look up the meaning of these words in the dictionary, which
of these have more than one meaning? Which of these words have other
meanings that are not in the dictionary?

The meaning of a word that is found in the dictionary is its denotation.


The other meaning that may be attached to it that is associated with an
emotion, experience, or culture is its connotation. This is not the dictionary
meaning.

Example: mean

Denotation: In Mathematics, mean refers to the average of


a number of items in a group.

Connotation: In the sentence, “I am happy and contented being the


mean in the family that loves me for what I am.” Mean refers to the speaker’s
status or position in the family.

Read the sentences below. Note the italicized word. Does the word
power mean the same in all of the sentences? Does the word power have other
