BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING STUDY PROGRAM

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
FACULTY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
UNIVERSITAS AIRLANGGA
A
Course : Biomechanics
Major : Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering
Date : Thursday, 7th January 2021
Time : 7 - 8 (100 minutes)
Place : Online
Lecturer : Alfian Pramudita Putra, S.T., M.Sc.

Answer the questions below carefully! Start with the prayer!

Please write down the type of the exam (A/B/C) in your answer sheet!
1. Gait Analysis (20 points)
In gait analysis, one of the main parameters is Ground Reaction Force (GRF). GRF is
shown as a graph called “M-graph” because the shape is similar to letter “M”. The GRF
graph is shown below. This parameter is important in analyzing the lower limb condition
of the patient. Drop foot is a condition where the foot of a patient will flap to the ground
during the terminal stance because it loses the ability to do dorsiflexion (lifting up the foot).
What will happen to the graph if a drop-foot patient does the gait analysis? Please explain
your answer in biomechanics point of view!

2. Biomechanics of Biomaterial Orthopedics (20 points)
Patient A will have a Total Knee Replacement Surgery. Both of his cruciatum ligaments
were torn due to sport injury. Please mention all parts of the implant that the doctor needs
to do the surgery including the material type and the reason why you choose that material
for each part!
3. Cardiovascular Biomechanics (20 points)
A patient has atherosclerosis that will undergo a Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
(PCI). After he is tested by using angiography, the doctor finds a hard cap in the clog in
the coronary artery. Please choose which device (the device choice is in the table below)
that needs to be used in the PCI procedure and explain the reason! (mention about the
trackability, pushability, torqueability, and steerability of the device)

Coronary Intervention (PCI)

4. Biomechanics of Injury in The Neck and Head (20 points)

Motor vehicle accident is the highest cases causing neck injury, especially in Indonesia. If
you are asked to redesign the helmet for motordriver, what would you change to increase
the safety and still give comfortable feeling? Please explain and give a brief sketch!
5. Cochlear Biomechanics (20 points)
What will happen if we shout or talk louder to a deaf person? If the problem is a severe
loss of outer hair cells, which devices should he use? Elaborate your answer!
6. Bonus Question (10 points)
A 55-y.o. male has a fracture in the shoulder. The condition are intact bone and ligament,
and intact glenoid part. Which kind of shoulder replacement can be suggested? Explain the
reason! Which type of humeral component would be appropriate? Explain the reason!
