Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to observe the effects of pressure on a cartesian diver.

Hypothesis: I believe that the more pressure you add will make the diver sink
Independent variable: the pressure
Dependent variable: will the diver sink or float

Procedure: (lab alternative)

Step 1: Following the lab alternative I looked at the tape measure and recorded the diver’s height and depth in
the water (before pressure is used)

Step 2: Next I measured the diver’s height and depth after applying pressure.
Step 3: And lastly, they applied more pressure and I also recorded the height and depth of the
diver.

Depth
Pressure Observation of Diver (cm)

Neutral (starting position)  The diver started at 3 cm.  11 cm

Small increase (lightly squeezing  The diver sunk to 11 cm after adding  21 cm
bottle)
A little bit of pressure.

Large increase (strongly squeezing  After squeezing the bottle harder, the diver sunk to  30 cm
bottle) 21 cm.
Conclusion

1. Was your hypothesis supported by your observations? Explain why.

Yes, my hypothesis was supported by my observations because as pressure increased the diver
sunk.

2. Identify any experimental errors.

3. You observed the effect of pressure on the buoyancy of the Cartesian diver. What is a
different variable that you could change the next time you repeat this experiment and that
might also affect the buoyancy of the diver?

You can change the amount of pressure you add to the bottle and you could also change the type of
liquid that you submerge the diver in and another variable that you can also change is the container
you put the cartesian diver in.

4. How does this experiment relate to what you've learned about submersible technology such
as submarines and ROVs?

It can relate to this topic because as submarines sink in the ocean the pressure will also increase
like what happened to the cartesian dive in the bottle.
