1.
A: So Min, what do you think about New Year?
B: Well, we have two New Years, one on January 1 st, and Seollah in January or
February. That’s a three-day holiday.
A: Oh, really? What does Seollah mean?
B: Ah, well, it is our traditional New Year. Seollah is an important holiday for us. I love
it.
A: What do you usually do?
B: My family and I sometimes go to the sea in Gangnam. You can stay up and see the
first sunrise of the New Year. But usually I go to my parents’ house, and my brother
and his family often come too. It’s a family time.
A: And do the children do anything special?
B: Yes. They dress up in special clothes, and we all play family games, like Yut Nori.
It’s like chess.
A: Do you eat a special meal?
B: Ah, what to eat?... Well, we usually have a soup with rice cakes in the morning.
A: And do you go out to talk?
B: Yes, sometimes. In the afternoon or evening we always see friends. They come to
us or we go to their homes and play more games. It’s very nice.

2.
A: So, Paul, do you like New Year?
B: Do I like New Year?... Ah, no. Not really. No, I don’t.
A: Huh, why not?
B: I don’t know. For me, New Year is just a normal day. It’s not special.
A: So what do you usually do then?
B: I stay at home and read, or you know, watch a film.
A: And what time do you go to bed?
B: Uh, I usually stay up late, have a beer, watch the fireworks at midnight from the
window. I get to go to bed at 1 or 2.
A: So what does your wife do? Does she stay at home with you?
B: No, she loves New Year. Well, she loves parties. She usually goes out with friends
from work.
A: Does she ask you to go with her?
B: No, no. But it’s okay. She has a good time, I have a good time. And that’s it, really?
A: Right.
